All the following flag technologies from BMW makes for a strong case in favor of a BMW M diesel model:

Let's face it, the Alfa Romeo 4C offers to customers a package of performance, fuel-efficiency, beauty, every day convenience and, ultimately, driving fun that has no parallel in the current car industry. It's a UNIQUE product in it's own right, which for Alfa Romeo it will mean a sales success story, no doubt!
So, how could BMW also have a UNIQUE product?! One that wouldn't have parallel in the current car industry?! How could BMW be a pioneer in a cost-effective manner by making use of their current flag technologies while projecting the brand name towards a much more fuel-efficient and environmental clean future?! I know it's a bold statement, but looking at the competition I see no alternative for BMW than building the first true M diesel model in the likes of a lighter-weight version of the 1M - called M2d ! For sure, it would be the FIRST true street diesel sports car EVER and a BIG step forward in building true GREEN dynamic machines: Rolling in California: Diesel cars as green machines Quote:

Diesel propositions are so competitive right now (and I'm not yet talking about BIODIESEL ) that makes it very hard to justify buying a EV (electric vehicle) such as Tesla, with all their associated problems like limited autonomy (let alone in a sports car), charging stations availability and price, when you can buy for a lot less money a diesel PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric) such as the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid, which combines a diesel engine and rechargeable batteries, with non of the EV associated problems and the same advantages :

As for the diesel engine sound I believe that BMW has nothing to fear looking at what Maserati has so successfully accomplished:

BMW will never build a lightweight fuel car as the Alfa Romeo 4C in the near future, so it's VERY clear in my mind that the way for BMW to make a statement is a M diesel model in the likes of lighter-weight 1M with a diesel engine !
I will let you to choose which one... However, realistically speaking, there's only two possibilities. Let's find out which:

For instance... Mercedes did a real good job with the new CLA/A45 AMG twins and I sincerely believe, it's not only a personal desire, that BMW this time shouldn't try to follow the 'higher engine power output figures' classic trend because it won't be able to compete against the Mercedes both aesthetically (WOW factor) and dynamically (performance-wise) judging by the future 2 series model.
Therefore, BMW should take the opportunity to mark a difference and take the 'Efficient Dynamics' statement to a MUCH higher level with the first true street diesel sports car, and the first one produced by the M division, weighting no more than 1500 kg (EU weight) and equipped with a tri-turbo diesel engine and the ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shifts, RWD or AWD, in order to compete against the fantastic AMG baby-twins: BMW, you have been warned! . . . |

Yes, I live overseas in Europe and like in some states in the US, diesel is not always cheaper than petrol across the european countries although that is true for the vast majority of them. One of the notable exceptions is the UK (1p ~ 2 cents)(*), where not only the diesel is much more expensive than the diesel in the US but also the price difference to petrol is much higher(**): (*) (**) The U.S. Energy Information Administration tracks International Energy Prices weekly showing data from 6 European countries. Some countries subsidize diesel through lower taxes. (Note that Spain, Portugal, and Greece are not tracked in these graphs. All have lower prices than the tracked countries): Weekly Retail Premium Motor Gasoline Prices (Including Taxes) vs Weekly Retail Diesel (Road) Prices (Including Taxes) However, the important issue is that even though diesel may not always be priced competitively with petrol the CLEAR higher-mileage advantage of diesel more than makes up for the possible price disadvantage and this is even MORE evident when talking about sports cars. To better understand this let me give you my example based on my driving style - what mileage I'm getting now with my BMW 1M and what I can save (educated estimates) using the same driving style with the Alfa Romeo 4C, by virtue of the lightweight and lower power yet better performance, and with a possible BMW M2d (M diesel version of the 2-series), by virtue of using a diesel engine and keep the weight not higher than 1500 kg (EU weight - European Directive 95/48/EC which specifies the kerb weight as a car in ready to drive condition with the fuel tank 90% full, a driver on board weighing 68 kg and luggage of 7 kg.): ................... Average Fuel Consumption......... (0-62 mph).......... EU Weight BMW 1M............ 18.5 l/100km (petrol).............. 4.9 sec................ 1570 kg Alfa 4C.............. 15.5 l/100km (petrol).............. 4.5 sec................ 1020 kg BMW M2d.......... 13.0 l/100km (diesel)............... 4.7 sec (xDrive).... 1500 kg CLA 45 AMG.............. N/A.......(petrol).............. 4.6 sec (AWD)...... 1585 kg (18.5 l/100 km = 12.7 MPG; 15.5 l/100 km = 15.2 MPG; 13.0 l/100 km = 18.1 MPG) With a diesel engine BMW could easily justify the use of AWD (xDrive) in a M car in order to be able to compete against the Mercedes AWD AMG twins in the areas where the twins excel:
And, at the same time, to CLEARLY surpass them for every driving style in:
PS: Realistically speaking:

Oh, and for those of you not believing how good the AMG baby-twins are you should not forget that the M135i with the 8-speed automatic gearbox can be faster than the 1M and that the AMG twins are faster than the M135i :
Now, the good news... there is already a M135i xDrive (AWD, 8-speed automatic gearbox) version which is faster than the M135i RWD only version (4.7 sec. against 4.9 sec. in the 0-62 mph, BMW quoted acceleration times) and weighs 75 kg more, at 1590 kg... . . . |

Take this car and turn it into the first (1500 kg, EU weight) diesel M car in the whole BMW's history, the M2d, and at the same time the first true driver's street diesel car EVER being produced... anything different from this will just be more of the same from BMW!

If the M Sport performance kit with a proper limited slip differential is to be available on all 2-series models, inclunding its most powerful diesel version - the already confirmed M225d, it can be a very good opportunity to show the whole world what a proper sports street diesel car is capable of. It can be a very promising start for a future M2 diesel version... |

The AMG baby-twins have raised the game in such a way that the old BMW's recipe won't work anymore. There must be some serious innovation... clearly this is not good enough, both aesthetically and dynamically...

I don't know, didn't measure it... but you can take the hand of a regular guy to have a sense of scale (since you are from TeXXXas) :
Also, you can see two distinct shades of white... 'white matte' for the LE version and 'bright white' for the standard version. LE Standard |

Somewhere in here, there was a statement that the front bonnet is bolted down, correct? So no split storage like a Boxster/Cayman? Is there any space behind the seats?
Gotta say I really like the shiny white, the matte is interesting, but not something I'd want for myself. |
