I'll bet there are osprey within 50-miles of you, but I couldn't tell you where. Driving over to Half Moon Bay I saw some likely looking water and trees. The "birders" will generally pen point interesting bird locations on their web sites.

Up in the Marin headlands at the Golden Gate bridge we have Hawk Hill. They love the updrafts there.
Dave, any idea of who this is? "You are standing on my mouse"

Nice shot. These are hard because of the back light and you typically need +1EV to properly expose the underside. That'll blow out the sky, but you'll have much better feather detail. Dave

Adrean, that doesn't look like any I've ever seen but I don't get around very much. Nice.

It is an old style water fountain connected to the old water tower in Mannheim, Germany. Still usable and older than any of us

Well, it just seems like you shoot a lot of NYC bridges... so naturally I thought that.

We call the male harrier "The Grey Ghost" because they're so hard to find and shoot. I still don't have a good one even though I see female harriers almost every week. Catching them riding wind currents is your best bet, like you did.
Here's one of my best harrier shots, a juvenile hunting in the snow: Northern harrier juvenile by dcstep, on Flickr

You know Dave, it will be your fault if I have to go out and buy a 500.
The background, snow falling and the color of the juvenile are great. You lucked out and had a perfect OOF background. The glint in the eye brings it out from the face.

Another stellar shot, Dave. I know you mentioned it before, but how did you get the falling snow to show so well?

If you get one you'll find that great bokeh and OOF BG is easy as pie. That "glint" in the eye is a snowflake. Mark, I'm using f/4 here for shallow DOF and +2EV because of he snow clouds. The flakes show so well because of the shallow DOF and bokeh behind the in-focus flakes. It was snowing relatively hard, but the flakes are pretty small.

No, I think it was an EV adjustment. I remember the image where he explained it. It was the one with the hawk (or eagle) flying with snow building up on his nose.
EDIT: Oops, beat me to it. Yep, thought it was an EV bump.

Interesting Josh, I like this exposure although I'd try and remove that red spot on the post. The purple/magenta gel looks good.
