As far as I understand it, the star rating just means BMW had some input into the designing of the tire to meet their desired standards. Doesn't mean any other tire is not "good enough" for the car, or that BMW hasn't approved any other tire for use on your car. As far as I can tell, as long as the tire you buy meets the minimum requirements for size, speed rating, and has the regulatory seal of approval for your market, there is nothing wrong with using any other tire appropriate for your climate. The "Mercedes approved" tires are just the same thing and is not manufactured by Mercedes, any other manufacturer can use them. It's like buying a USB-C cable from Apple, has the "Made for iPhone" logo on the box but you can use it for any other USB-C device.

On the UK website there is a list of all the tyres that 'might' be fitted to the car that BMW has certified against. Its been post a few times in various threads on here, might be worth a search to put peoples mind at rest.

You are correct. But there must be a reason for a ☆ rated tire in a vehicle when it leaves the BMW manufacturing plant.
For example, If you buy a brand new iPhone, would you be happy if it came with a Samsung charger in the box?.
As per liability, who would be liable if something were to happen and the manufacturer claimed not at fault because it was not the original approved equipment installed that caused it?.
Not my first new BMW but the first with a different manufacturer approved tire.
This are just questions that need to be addressed before purchasing.
Attached is part of a BMW CPO Service check list that tells what safety related items have to be replaced with BMW (OEM) parts before certifying.

Thanks. I looked at the UK website and found the definition of the ☆ rating on the tires. Took a screen shot.

Except that BMW doesn’t manufacture tires, so your analogy doesn’t quite fit. The star mark is only because BMW had a hand in designing the tire to their “ideal” standards. Doesn’t mean every car that leaves the factory has to have these star marked tires, nor does that checklist mean it has to be replaced with star marked tires. It just means it has to be replaced with a tire that meets OEM standards. “factory approved/OEM” is not the same as “star marked”. Going forward I believe BMW will most likely provide star marked tires whenever possible, however supply constraints may affect this, as well as certain sizes/tread types/etc just may not even be available yet.

Here’s the first thing that popped up on google:

New BMW X1 Fitted with Continental Tires

Seems to be a summer tire designed for economy and noise reduction. If your order sheet says performance tires I’d probably argue that.

Here is the list of tyres that you 'might' get depending on tyre size fitted.

The tires are not (BMW star) rated but (MO) which means Mercedes original equipment. I contacted BMW USA with a few questions and still waiting for response.
I opted for the 20” 872M wheels with high performance tires, they are Pirelli p zero summer rubber

By the way, for all of you veterans or active duty military, make sure you check out the BMW Military Incentive plan offered for the month of November only to those eligible. Up to a $1500 discount if you take delivery in November.
The military discount is generally applicable year round. It may fluctuate by model and time of year but the $1500 has been available since at least August when I looked.

Agreed. That’s not a performance tire… yet another frustration with the X1M35 release.

I think the $1500 only applies to a lease or purchase using BMW Financial Services. Otherwise I think the discount may only be $500 (if any at all).

I paid cash for my M35i and got $1500 discount. $500 lease credit if leased thru BMW FS and $1500 discount if financed thru BMW FS or if you pay cash.

Sweet! Do you have a link to that offer? When I check online it just verifies me through Verify_ID and then refers to a dealer. I've already ordered and waiting delivery but it won't be here in November.

I went through that hassle as well and the dealer code it gave me wasn't actually valid/usable by the dealer. From the id website, search for trucar buying service, that will ultimately link you to the right deal and code to get your $1500. Or if it posts, try this link:

Thanks. I won't be taking delivery this month but I'll keep an eye on it and try to use it as a negotiation point when delivery takes place. I was going to use TrueCar but the customization options are limited and didn't fit what I wanted to build.

Military Discount

Google BMW Military Discount. When you get to the sight it will ask you to verify your eligibility through ID.me. Once verified you will be given an offer code. Your dealer should be able to help you. The discount is taken by the dealer off of the price of the vehicle.

On the tire debate - I got the 20" with "Performance Tires" which are the Continental EcoContact 6 * MO. It does have the star in between the 6 and the MO. So perhaps it's meant for both BMW and Mercedes.

Thank you so much. I'll find out when I see the car.
By the way, how do you like those tires?. Are they quiet?.

Only driven about 100 miles, but I have zero issues so far. They are pretty thin for a SUV.. so for sure mindful of the bumps.
