Both new and familiar for Spielberg to Budapest
Pirelli - 30 May 2025
https://press.pirelli.com/both-new-a...g-to-budapest/
Pirelli has informed the teams of the compounds chosen for the Grands Prix in the run up to the summer break: Austria, Great Britain, Belgium and Hungary. The selection from Formula 1’s Global Tyre Partner decided on in conjunction with the FIA and Formula 1 includes both new and familiar choices. The compounds for the races in Spielberg and Budapest are the same as last year, while there are significant changes for Silverstone and Spa.
Let’s start with the familiar. For the races in Austria (27 to 29 June) and Hungary (1-3 August) any historical reference is purely coincidental and the teams will be able to use the C3 as Hard, the C4 as Medium and the C5 as Soft. Although these two tracks are almost identical in length – 4.318 km for Spielberg, 4.381 km for the Hungaroring – they have very different characteristics. The former is very fast with just ten corners and quite long straights, the second is very twisty with only one straight, but the forces exerted on the tyres are not particularly severe.
It’s a completely different story when it comes to Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps, two of the most appealing tracks on the calendar, famous for all sorts of reasons, including the levels of stress they impose on the tyres. Usually for Silverstone, Pirelli has selected the hardest trio of available compounds, but this year the decision has been taken to go one step softer, therefore the Hard is the C2, the Medium the C3 and the Soft the C4. As for Spa-Francorchamps, two of the compounds are the same as last year’s and they fit in the same order, namely the C3 as Medium and the C4 as Soft. However, unlike in 2024 when the Hard was the C2, this time it will be the C1.
This choice is in line with similar ones at some races in the early part of the season with the aim of allowing for a greater choice of race strategies, which could make the one-stop and two-stop equally attractive. In Silverstone, the challenge will be to manage the Medium, which for the past two years actually served as the Soft. While in Spa, which is also a Sprint event, those opting for the Hard, with the idea of stopping just once, will have to take into consideration the performance difference that now separates the C1 from the C2, which was last year’s Hard.

Canadian Grand Prix. FP1

Dry, Air: +16C, track +42C

The main event of the first practice was Charles Leclerc's accident 15 minutes after the start.

The accident is even more unpleasant because the video shows how Charles hit both the front and rear parts of the suspension, which means that the mechanics will have a lot of work to restore the car for the second practice.

Hamilton did not have time to go to the longrun due to his spin and subsequent car check - and this means that Ferrari will not receive information on working with tires in the racing simulation from any car.

A lot of crashes, spins and minor incidents on the track - it is understandable: a city track, slippery surface, and only the girls managed to roll on a little rubber in their practice. The track will evolve, but during the weekend, and there will be no other sessions between FP1 and FP2 – what they themselves have done is what they will get.

Williams are very confident in the second and third lines. Albon, by the way, said yesterday that he is confident in the car. Much more than in himself.

McLaren, it seems, were in no hurry and were simply working according to their program, but Norris had a lot of mistakes, cuts and crashes. The car is behaving extremely nervously.

Khadzhar is sixth and the best of the rookies: if he does not want to go to Red Bull, there is no need to rush)

Canadian Grand Prix FP2
Dry, air +19C, track +40C

Due to damage to the monocoque, Leclerc did not go out for the second practice.

The session began with an accident by Lance Stroll, who hit the wall and damaged the front suspension.

The first part of the practice was full of sharp moments, traffic, blockages; Gasly almost crashed the car, Colapinto spun again in the same place as in the first session, and in the end he closed the results of the session. It seems that, having received an order from Briatore not to drive the car, he is simply afraid to go now. If this continues, we will soon not see him in F1.

Alex Albon missed the pits and apologized to the surprised mechanics waiting for him in the pitlane.

George Russell topped the time table (by the way, for the first time this season), Kimi Antonelli was slightly less than 0.3 seconds behind him and showed the third result. Albon again set a good time and got into the top-4 results. Alonso is suddenly fifth.

Hadjar listened to our advice and slowed down a little 😊 Lawson was faster.

Verstappen spent almost the entire session adjusting the car: he was unhappy with the brakes, among other things. McLaren continued testing the new front wing.

16 drivers finished in the second, nine of them fit in half a second. What is characteristic, McLaren did not lead any of the practices on Friday.

🇨🇦 Telemetry and infographics for Friday in Canada

Mercedes, Red Bull and McLaren noted the need to refine the settings. At the same time, all three teams were equal in race pace.

⚫ Mercedes increased downforce by updating the throat of the bottom. Let me remind you that in Barcelona they updated the sidewalls. Having compared the configurations of the rear suspension, in the second session both drivers drove with a more aggressive, new one.

🟠 McLaren updated not only the plumage of the front suspension to harmonize with the new front wing. But also the geometry so that Norris could feel the car better in the corners. The question is - how will this affect Piastri? The track itself is not favorable to the MCL39, which I described in detail in yesterday's streams. Plus, they did not find a balance.

🔵 Red Bull made a couple of changes to the set-up before the second practice, but this made the car more nervous. Today they will return to the basic settings from the first session. Dr. Marko notes that this once again shows how narrow the working window of the RB 21 is. A couple of small changes had a big negative impact on the car.

🔴 Ferrari are still sad in race and qualifying mode. And Leclerc completed only 9 laps. After an accident, the monocoque needed to be replaced.

🔵 Williams is good here. On a track with similar short corners, the FW47 works great.

🏎Formula 1, Canadian Grand Prix, qualifying.

The qualifying promised to be great – the qualifying was great.

I'm very sorry for Charles. I'm very glad Franco woke up. Great qualifying from Fernando.

Max – I applaud. But...

I applaud George while standing. A great lap, which I'll definitely watch a couple more times today.

There are several investigations, so let's not part ways.

George Russell takes pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix!

"I have a bit more scope for penalty points to play with (Max)" - Russell

A very cool qualifying and with a very unexpected result. Max took the interim pole, Piastri beat him, Max got it back, and in the end the best time was shown by George Russell, and on a set of medium tires!

By the way, Max, Alonso and Antonelli also chose medium sets of tires for the final segment.

Charles made a mistake/bad luck/was blocked, but one way or another he is only eighth. Lewis is fifth. Norris is seventh. McLaren decided to add some intrigue.

As a result, George and Max will start from the front row tomorrow. Tell me, what could go wrong?

Well, I won't be original - excellent qualifying! In addition, with the unclear situation with the tires, I want to believe that the race will be no less interesting. Although when expectations are too high, then you are often disappointed - for example, Piastri will easily overtake everyone and leave. I hope it will still be interesting.

Montreal weather and "medium" tires suit Mercedes - again the German "diva" in all its glory, took and came to life. Russell did well, used the potential. And brought Antonelli as much as half a second. So I don't really admire Kimi's fourth place.

Max, apparently, squeezed out the maximum. We are waiting for a fight at the start. Although it seems to me that it will do without a complete massacre.

McLaren did not hide when it looked very uneven in training - the same Norris ultimately failed, as in the course of many sessions. It's not a Lando track. And again he is the worst of the two Woking drivers. I see no excuses.

Alonso is top! And the new Aston products, presented a few rounds ago, are obviously working. Your cap, but now there is such a density that any serious package of updates and such a triviality as a suitable or unsuitable track can raise him to the top 10 or throw him to the last place.

It is a great pity that we did not see Leclerc's true capabilities. I think fourth place there would have been a reserve, and maybe a fight for third with Piastri. In addition, eighth position also kills Charles' chances of fighting for something serious in the race. Too bad...

I expect a three-place penalty for Hadjar for blocking Sainz. Let's see if the judges will surprise us somehow.

A good qualifying for Colapinto - now it is important to work hard in the race. Surely the bosses will be keeping a close eye on Franco's pace compared to Gasly, who starts behind him.

Almost the first qualifying session of the season where I have no complaints about Hulk. He got the most out of it, I think.

Lawson, with his 19th place, is getting closer to Formula E or endurance racing.
