This is our Luna, second Tortie we had in the family. She's gone back to the universe several years ago, but still remembered fondly. Torties are something special for sure.

Looking for advice. Single dude renting, trying to get a companion. How many of you leave your dogs alone at home when you work a 9-5. How has that worked for you? Thinking about a dog or a cat, or maybe both. Thanks.

Cats are fine with this, especially if you pick up a bonded pair to keep each other company. I'd suggest adopting adult cats from a rescue organization that can give you a little background so you know they'll be OK alone etc, and if it isnt working out you can return them or try another. If you are new to it you may want to find the local rescue org and try fostering at first, for a low-comittment way to see if it is for you. I have much less experience with dogs, but I'd think this much time alonw (and w/o bathroom breaks) would not be good for them, even if it is doable. |

Cats are good in the house alone and will be so happy to see you when you get home. They are very good companions. And yes, agree to go to your local shelter. Also agree to adopt an adult; kittens get adopted easily and adults sometimes get left behind. Most cats do fine in the house on their own so you should be okay. Most shelters neuter or spay and give the necessary shots before adoption as well.

When I was single and flying a lot, I'd be gone 4 days at a time. I had two cats.
They had an automatic self-scooping litter box, automatic feeders and water bubblers with a large reservoir. When I left, I'd leave the stereo in the family room on low for them with the channel set to something with voices-- usually NPR. The cats did fine. 3-4 days was (and continues to be, if my wife and I go out of town for a few days) a non-event and they were always happy to see me-- they'd both be by the entryway when they heard the garage door opening. Of course, NPR might not have been the best choice as sometimes when I'd come home, they'd be marching around the room with little kitty signs over whatever the hot topic of the week was! R.

Thanks for the guys that helped me decide, I might still end up getting a dog later down the road!

Get toys; they like to play. PS - That's how old our current kitty was when we got her. She's going to be 12 this year. |

Cats are a lot easier to take care of than dogs if you are not going to be home most of the day. Like flybigjet, I also have an automatic feeder and an automatic scooping litter box for those occasions when we are not going to be home for a few days. They work great and when we get home after being away for a few days, she is so happy to see us that she goes nuts running around the house with excitement.

Haha, he doesn’t snuggle much, but he loves to be petted. He also sleep all day everywhere around the apartment lol.

Cats are known to sleep between 12 to 18 hours a day. I think my old girl sleeps more than that. Last edited by Esteban; 03-04-2024 at 02:25 PM.. |
