In California is pepper spray considered an incapacitating weapon? For example, if a perp tries to pepper spray you can you shoot them? The reason I ask is there were some asshole that tried to carjack someone at a local grocery store here a couple days ago was unsuccessful ran across the street to the mall and assaulted a lady with pepper spray in car jacked her car

It can be, that's why we use it……however, it is not effective on everybody.

As for the car jacking example….

….one could argue the assault.

Oh phew... For a moment I though you would administer pre-empted correction before I had a chance to see a judge.

I'd like to know the science behind this. Years ago I tested one of my pepper sprays to see if it still worked by spraying it into the sink with the water running. I almost passed out.

It's more about the chemical nature of a person's body. Most people will be affected, but if you're on a drug that dissociates pain it will be ineffective. I had a few academy classmates that shrugged off OC spray like champs. Ineffective was an understatement.

Also, tolerance can be built up.

As someone who had been in CS Gas Chambers more times than I can count, when we do pepper spray training, is comes off as a minor irritant now, over the years.

Hardly an incapacitants, at this point.

My experience with OC has been that it usually has a significant effect on the coppers that get cross contaminated and a moderate effect on the client.

All the civilian friends love watching training videos where their Leo friends get tased and pepper sprayed.

Just sayin'….

Agreed. I know an individual who was responsible for teaching a lock picking course. He paired the trainees up for the first challenge where they each got an identical padlock he had prepared that they had to pick. First one to pick it got to stab the other person with a shocknife.

Next challenge was different padlock going one by one, but a big timer in your face set for 5 minutes and a paintball claymore perched behind you 10 feet away that went off if you failed to pick it by the time the clock counted down.

I asked for video of course, because I was laughing my butt off at the challenges he designed and I would have loved to see it, but sadly, no video.

Jesus. Maybe I should've tried that method. Got bored during lockdowns and ordered a lock picking kit.

Recommend. Was entertaining. Plus good life hack just in case.

It's somewhat"rare" that these type of mass personnel training / qualification events are recorded because to the instructors running the course or conducting the evaluation... it's just another day.

Running hundreds of people through what may essentially be a conveyor belt because it's done every cycle of new recruits or recertification for senior personnel just isn't significant for the facilitators, so no need to record.

Also, the personnel going through the event are usually instructed to leave or secure personal items / clothes (like phones) so they don't get damaged or contaminated during the event... or the person may just be too incapacitated to use it, lol.

Reminds me of the time some friends and I were testing out shock collars on each other (yes, alcohol was involved...)

I test out all shock collars before putting them on dogs. They can make your leg kick, to say the least!
