I'm Gold level and love it. The kit they send you when you first join is nice. I plan to borrow a 1D-X soon and I've had a couple of free cleanings with exceptional turn around. No warranty or repair work yet, but discounts and expedited service seems critical to me.

Dave,
You still have to pay to ship your equipment to them at Gold level, right? Btw, how do you like the CPS strap? Did you keep it or sell it?

I love the strap. I've got a swivel device that mounts to the tripod mount and put my second camera on that, with the CPS strap, slung to my left side. The cushioning is just right for my 7D with the 70-200/f4 mounted. When I travel, I move the swivel to the 5D MkIII and it's my walk-around with the 24-105/f4. If anyone wants to sell their CPS strap, I'll pay 40-bucks for another. Dave

Gold level here, too. I haven't used the clean and check service yet, but I agree with Dave, the kit they send is nice. I converted my CPS strap to a sling style. It works well.
My only beef with them is they send the kit Fedex with a "must have" signature delivery. The Fedex driver can't take a signed door tag. You have to be there to sign. When I renewed my membership, I couldn't be here to sign for the kit because I had just started my new job. The Fedex facility is 31 miles away, so I couldn't go pick it up either. They were supposed to resend it with lesser signature requirements, but they never did. I'll need to chase them down on that now.

It would be cool if they discounted the Platinum level based on the # of pts you have.
Oh well, I'm officially a gold member now.

We are supposed to get clouds tomorrow night. So even though I just got home from a summer drive that ended up being an almost 500 mile excursion (The new car is just too fun to drive!) I went out back and shot this one. Just trying to be a bit different. I will go out later on to get a "standard" shot. Here it is rising over my back fence. It was hot today, and you can see the atmospherics shimmering around the edges.

And on that note about the car trip, I had so much fun I had to drive this route twice. I used to ride my motorcycle through here years ago, but had forgotten how much fun it is. If you are ever driving between Reno and San Francisco, CA HWY 70 through the Feather River Canyon is a great scenic alternative to I-80 (Donner Pass).

I've got three friends that shoot Sony for wildlife. Besides the limited lens selection, the big problem with Sony has been AF tracking. Apparently they've made strides with this camera, but I'd still be leery. See what DPReview says:
No one could reasonably expect the A99's AF performance to be on par with the much more expensive pro-oriented Nikon D4 and Canon EOS-1D X cameras. And while Sony has made obvious strides over earlier Alpha-series models, a direct peer like the Canon EOS 5D Mark III offers a nearly equivalent frame rate, wider AF array coverage and a more robust predictive traking system. The A99 does have the advantage of simplicity of operation. Set the camera to AF-D mode and choose from among the AF area options. That's literally all there is to it. And for the photographer looking to occasionally capture recreational or family sports, the A99 can produce good results, if you set your expectations accordingly. If you're not going to shoot wildlife or specialize in fast sports, then I think that the Sony is a viable alternative to the 5D MkIII. Its sensor is top of the heap at the moment. I'm with the 5D3 because of its unmatched lens selection and fantastic AF system. Dave

EOS-M deals at B&H.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/CA...tal+Camera/N/0 With 22mm lens - $299 With 18-55 lens - $349 This camera with the 22mm lens takes up less room in your bag than a few filters. It's definitely a nice body to have along for quick draw shots. UPDATE: Amazon and Adorama both now matching this deal.
