Yep rushing another SW drop usually has poor results. As flashmonkey noted, would've been better to push out another calendar year and stick with ID8. Really no competitive reason to push out a new info base so quickly on the heels of ID8...IMO

That was the point exactly, the UK X1 drivers are being used as a test bed by BMW before the iDrive 9 rollout worldwide.

Android Auto or Carplay-based car OSes are the future, Volvo had similar teething issues with its first Android Auto iteration but is now one of the best car systems to use, hopefully the same with BMW's iDrive 9.

I'm not in UK but hoping to get the iDrive 9 in my 2024 iX1 as I don't want to be stuck in the past with iDrive 8 or 8.5 without any further updates.

If you read my post, I was saying I felt they shouldn’t have done that. Would it not be better to internally test the vehicles software more before a public release? Usually beta software is an opt-in procedure on products, not forced upon people making large purchases.

I saw an online video where a review of the X1 showed a navigation feature where gasoline prices could be displayed on the X1 navigation map. Is that a feature of ID9 or is that already available on ID8 or 8.5? Will it be country specific (the video was a German vehicle)? Where is the data coming from? For example, in USA would it be it from Gas Buddy?

See the 14.25 minute mark of the video at

Haven’t checked my wife’s X1 with ID8 but it’s certainly a feature in my car which also has ID8. We’re in the UK so not country but maybe still region specific feature…

In the US, mine does it. In the bottom left corner of the nav screen there is a toggle for the different views next to the compass icon. If you select expanded, gas stations will display the prices for the recommended fuel.

Hey everybody, I’m trying to figure out wether my upcoming x1 expected for entering production in week 41 will roll out with ID8 or 9 and whether ID8 car will be updated to 8.5 or not.

I would like to ask the UK owners of an ID9 model to check what Headunit version they have installed in their car.

To do so you should navigate to this menu with the hardware specs of your HU:

Go to "Displays" App -> Control Display -> System Settings -> Regulatory Notes -> Head Unit. That should show you the model numbers.

Thank you in advance for the reply!

I was under the impression that until further notice, only select models in the UK will be getting iDrive 9 for 2023 and nowhere else. Furthermore, in a recent post online someone posted, iD8 U11 X1 head units cannot be upgraded to iDrive 8.5 due to hardware differences.

I believe you are right, bmw press release states that global X1 will get ID9 starting with the ones produced in November 23.

I also understand the ID8 ones won’t be updated to 8.5.

Still, it would be helpful to know the HU version of the ID9 driving around if anybody can manage to post a pic of it!

I am afraid no id8 u11 will upgrade to 8.5.
Only mid sized and above BMWs id8 will be upgraded to 8.5
Compact BMWs (BMW include U11 in that category) will be built with id9 (some UK U11already) from November for U11, expanding later to other compact models.

As my PHEV U11 will be delivered in October, I am afraid I will be stuck with id8. Wish (but no big hope) to be wrong

I’ve had my X1 23i Xdrive M-Sport for around 7 weeks now and I can safely say that while the car itself is great (well built, looks great and the drive is simply superb), ID9 is a total clustef**k!!

Like others here, Driver Recorder and Augmented View are just missing (tbf, my dealer has said they are coming in updates). Spoken post code search is awful (9 times out of 10 it just fails or returns incorrect results). Spoken full address searches return pretty much everything BUT what I’m searching for. My Trips just doesn’t work. The weather app/widget has simply stopped working. A whole load of voice controls are missing. I used to be able to open the windows on my M135i, can’t on the X1.

The fan speeds for the climate control are hilarious… either nothing or hurricane. The list goes on.

I’m looking forward to the upcoming () updates because, as it stands, I feel ID9 is seriously spoiling a great car.

I’m an experienced software developer and know beta software when I see it and installing beta software IN A CAR is not really acceptable. BMW seems to have forgotten that this is a car and NOT a bloody iPhone!!

ID-9 is freshly new, rather than a feature upgrade from ID-8/8.5, based on what I read.

There is another user posted some feedbacks today.

Stuck with ID-8 may be not that bad. (Mine will be likely be here around Oct too, so ID-8 very likely).

Unless you're in the UK or getting a '24 model you'll definitely be getting ID8

More ID9 weirdness today mainly involving Spotify.

Since I got the car and Spotify was installed, I’ve had an issue where the system keeps muting itself. Press un-mute you get a split second of sound and then it mutes itself again. The only way to fix it is to change to a different audio source (I.e. radio) and then switch back. “Problem” sorted, until the next time.

Today, opened Spotify and more than half of the sections heading on the screen are in German.

Finally, and not Spotify related, the weather app/widget still not working. I thought we were expecting an update in July? Well, they’ve got two days

Hers one for you to try… when stationary, and the engine running, ask the car what your current miles per gallon is. Last time I asked, it answered 1m+ mpg LOL
