For this it requires parking mode monitoring, and it's best to have a backup battery to keep the dashcam powered when the engine is off. This way, it doesn't drain the car battery.

I'm planning to move the Thinkware Q800 with iVolt battery from my wife's 118i to the iX1 when it arrives in March.

It works really well with parking mode, the only downside in the UK is it significantly impacts the already crappy DAB reception.

In my M340i, I've switched to Radio Player via CarPlay as DAB reception is so poor. I've tried various things to stop the interference but nothing has stopped it so far. In the 118i the battery is hidden behind the glove box and in the M340i it's in the storage area under the boot floor.

My Dashcam has an internal battery for this. When the power comes on it auto records, when the power goes off it goes into park protection mode. If you want permanent power most of the other spare fuse ways were permanent live. It was not what I needed though. The choice is yours, both available in the same location.

In my previous car, I just wired it to the car battery via the live fuse and used the inbuilt battery protection but it still caused issues in the winter when I wasn't doing a lot of miles. Had all sorts of weird electrical errors which were all fixed by putting the car on charge overnight.

X1 has the anti-theft recorder although it is not very convenient to use ( I guess it has to be activated each time ) and the recording time is quite short.

The drive recorder will automatically record on detected impact, including the prior 20sec before the impact. You can also manually record by holding down the Parking Assist button next to the engine start button on the center console. When you manually record, it can record from all 4 exterior cameras.

The trouble with this is it's not constantly recording, so anything prior to the recording like the events that led up to the accident are not captured. The other issue is that the car may not detect an impact in some cases, which means nothing will be recorded either. Originally I thought the Drive Recorder would be enough for me, but I've decided to get a separate dash cam for front and rear as well as a backup battery for parking mode so it doesn't strain the OEM battery.

is there no good cordless radar/laser detector that use batteries currently? I travel and rent cars at many cities frequently. It's way more convenient to use cordless detector, but there doesn't seem to be a good one.

I wonder where u hided the backup battery for the parking mode..

Did u end up bought the Thinkware F200 from BB and installed both the front and rear cam?

Not yet, I still have my old F200 from my f32 I can install but I need to order a new mount for it first. I was originally going to put it in my ‘06 Scion xB, but I hardly drive that shitbox. The backup battery isn’t big, it can probably be hidden behind the glovebox from what my installer tells me. The hard part is getting batteries shipped to my state, many places won’t ship it here because they’re not allowed on planes, and no one carries them locally so I may have to get creative.

I currently have the FitcamX in my 3 series which is ok and plugs in to the rain sensor plug under the mirror cover. I have asked them if they are doing one for the U11 but they need some photos of the mirror so I will send them some when I have collected the car.

updated: got time to find the fuse for the cigarette lighter (F46 with yellow 20A fuse next to the relay and underneath the passenger glove box) and used an add-to-fuse tap to connect to the dashcam. It's not the perfect fuse spot because it didn't turn off until few minutes after the vehicle is shut down.

I have a radar detector waiting to install too, but I do not want the light of the detector remains ON inside the cabin. Anyone knows if there is an instant on/off fuse spot that sync with the vehicle's on/off status ?

Dash Camera

aviocat , Thanks for posting the fuse diagram. I have the US version so my fuse box is on the left, I have significantly less fuses interestingly. I tapped into the same fuse you have tapped.

My current setup is blackboxmycar power cell 8 battery + VIOFO dash camera.

I've noticed that when I lock the car and I look inside, the battery is still charging off the tap as if the fuse is still providing power. In your experience, does it take some time for the car to "turn off" after we walk away from it and lock it? It seems like the x1 is "on" for a little bit after we lock it.

I have attached my current fuse box (fuse tap is on different spot in this picture).

I appreciate everyone's help, looking forward to more mods on the X1!

My car specs:
2023 BMW X1 Portimao Blue, M package, US version, Convenience Package, Heated seats/steering wheel, remote engine start.

FWIW, you can download the fuse card on this site by entering your VIN: https://www.bmw.ie/en/topics/owners/fusecard.html

Thanks, I checked this when the x1 first came out and it was unavailable.

I am having issue confirming which fuse is ACC vs constant. It seems like when I check every fuse using fuse checking tool (the one with the light on it), all the fuses are on when the engine is off. Makes me wonder if this is just on for a short duration after turning car off or are all constant on. Can't contort myself to check the fuse box while care is locked and doors are closed haha to double check this.

I can confirm it will shut down the power after a few minutes and it's been more than a month since the installation, there's no battery draining problem.

You can stay outside the vehicle for a few minutes to watch that the power is off but you must not have the key near the vehicle when you are checking it, otherwise, it will stay ON.

Also, whenever the vehicle senses the key is near as you walk by, the ACC power is automatically ON, so you will see the dashcam comes on even you do not intend to open the door and get in. Guess we have to get used to this BMW's personality.

And if you worry the battery running dry too fast this way, you can try to charge the battery by lifting your foot off the accelerator more often, it's interesting to see the message that it's charging the battery if you do that when you are in the 'live vehicle' app while driving.

does the built-in Drive Recorder only record and save videos when there's an impact?

I guess I'll have to get a real dashcam and install it soon.

You can also initiate a manual recording. With ID7 on our X3 you can configure it to save up to 20 seconds before and after the recording is triggered. I think you can go longer than that (30 seconds?) on the X1 with ID8.

Some more info in this thread, you can record to a USB flash drive but you have to have the app open.

Anyway, nowhere to find the fusecard online/dealer or in the car so i did it by trial and error, see attached the picture shows where i picked up a spare slot next to the yellow fuse alongside the blue square relay. This is power off when the car is locked/alarm armed/asleep but powered at all other times.

The cable was run tucked easily into the roof lining then across the a pillar joint to the roof lining and down under the door seal. All neat and invisible, no disassembly apart from the dashboard left side panel, it’s push fit so easy to remove. With the end panel off and the fuse cover lowered the route is easy and straight through to the fuse box. All done in about 20 mins.

Hope this helps some of you.
Also, many thanks for the info and the very useful photo. I 've had my X1 for a few months but put off installing my Nextbase dash cam because I couldn't find any info online as to where to connect.

Regards

Looks like there’s a U11 fitcamx.
Anyone have this and have opinions? Thanks!
