AWD M... Ugh ugh.
It's obvious that if you have 850 Nm going at rear wheels only and smash the throttle, you'll be spinning all the time. And if it is even wet, the car becomes basically undriveable. I'd suggest stop wanting more and more power and get some driving lessons before you get such a car. |

New M cars with so much power and low end torque, are somewhat disadvantaged by an intrusive traction control systems which limits the amount of power you can put down due to tire slippage.
Porsche, GTR, Bugatti, Lamborghini, AMG, ... All recognize that if you make all that ridiculous power, you need to figure out a better way to lay it on the pavement. Besides, hasn't the i8 taught us anything? BMW can pull off a fantastic, sporty and very well handling AWD car. No doubt. Imagine what the M division can do with that AWD system ... Xdrive under steers too when pushed. I have not liked it in any bmws I've driven whereas Quattro in the r8 or rs5 or s4 is pretty good. |

Talk to the guy who did the Dinan Stage 1 on his M4 - the car is un-driveable. At some point, you have to face it, there is only so much power you can get to the ground when the rears (or fronts) are doing it alone.
And... once you have had AWD, man it is tough to look back (at least if you live in a place with rain and snow!)

Seriously, this has been rumored for YEARS, even for the current F10 M5. Did you think the dude just came on and single handedly change the direction of the company in 2 weeks? No.

+1 to going back to roots, focusing on driving mechanics, reduce weight, and keep the power reasonable. This HP race is positively stupid. AWD and autoboxes are not fun to drive.

That little 235 is fast as hell, spirited as all get out and underscores BMW still knows how to build a car the enthusiast will covet..

The m235 isn't bad to drive, but isn't anything special. Still is very heavy despite its very small size and basic features. I just don't see it having the passion just that all the other bmws have gotten so soulless it makes you think that but not compared to other cars that truly have soul and real character. I don't recall the m235 doing very well when it was in road and tracks performance car of the year either. |

Against consumer popularity, I'd rather have a car less in weight and less in power. Higher driver dynamic, less fuel consumption and less pollution.
Imagine a modern E36 M3 with today's technological abilities. Problem pucking solved.
