I ate at a Mexican restaurant somewhere in the Upper Eastside.

Cannot be remotely compared to San Diego's Mexican food.

Oh, I just came back from an interview from New York for AECOM (Yeshiva) in the Bronx. Spent most of my time in Queens and the Bronx - spent only one night/dinner in the city. So far - unimpressive. I'm trying really hard to think of something positive from the whole trip but I'm sorry, the best thing I can say is that the shower head in the Radisson in New Rochelle kicks ass.

I'd lose my sanity living in either Queens or the Bronx. Manhattan is tolerable but another applicant at AECOM said she's paying $1600/mo for a puny studio in the Upper East. Wow.

mexican food outside cali, ehhhh no thanks. a coworker had mexican food in hawaii. lol. said it was terrible. i was like, what were you thinking?!

going back to pizza, there's this awesome place in santa barbara on state street, uncle rocco's ny pizza. went there the night before bimmerfest, awesome thin crust.

in sf, i like blondie's and this one place by dna lounge on 11th street. the place on 11th is open real late too.

If you end up working there, the smartest/cheaper thing for you to do would be to move to Westchester. It would probably be safer, and cheaper. You could get a nice 1 bedroom for about 1200...opposed to paying that much and living in the bronx..or paying 1500 and getting a studio in Manhattan...plus you can bring your e90 and have a parking spot and not worried about somebody playing bumper cars with it.

In SF my favorite is Escape from NY pizza in the haight, or redboy pizza in northbeach. Pizza Orgasmica in the marina isn't to bad either.

I considered Westchester, as that is where the majority of AECOM faculty residences are located.

I have to compromise, however, because my girlfriend would really like to work somewhere in the city (and the commute for her by bus/subway from Westchester is what I assume to be 1+ hour)...I can't believe real estate in Manhattan is that insane.

If you are ever in the New Haven, CT area (about 60 miles north of NYC) try Frank Pepe's Pizzeria at 157 Wooster Street.

If you move to White Plains (a city feel), its 37 minutes from the train station to grand central....commutes not half bad!

When I was in Europe, the pizza in Austria was just about the best I'd ever had. What I thought was weird though was that just about every restaurant we went to offered pizza. It was like that in Austria, Hungary, Italy, and the Czech Republic. It was kind of like having a kids menu with hamburgers on it here in the US. Everyone sold pizza over there.

On another Italian food note, I cranked out some homemade pasta last night again. I love fresh pasta, As for the sauce I went with a light tomato base w/ sautéed minced onion, homemade spicy italian sausage meatballs and fresh basil.

I use a special combination of primarily semolina pasta flour mixed with a cup of rice flour for a softer texture.

I second pepes, even though the cook said it's not worth it to travel from NY but I usually stop by on the way to Foxwoods. New Haven supposedly has the best hamburger too, lol. I went there(Louis Lunch) and the place was tiny and close to a dump but the burgers were better than a normal burger just on white bread. No condiments and if you bring your own you get thrown out. There was no free parking, you had to pay. Not worth the trouble. A decent place in New Haven is called Bar. It's a bar that brews their own beer but they also have pizza. Again, not a place to take a date but OK IMHO. They had a mashed potato pie there. + the waitress gave me her number, . Modern apizza is also good but would rather go to pepes. We should have a meet/drive there and to foxwoods when they open their new casino in may. Sinatra used to have his drive pick up from Sally's down the street from pepes and I think Bill Clinton went to Pepes when he was in town.

In Manhattan Lombardi's is supposed to be good.
