I was paying less than $3.00/gallon for 93 yesterday.

My pics is up right in my profile so I AM NOT HIDING. I can quite assure you that I act like this in real life and I don't get my ass kicked. I'm no MMA all star but I can handle myself and I got enough weight behind me to back my blows. Yes I might be a dick but I am also pretty quick to help people. For instance I went out of my way to find a E9x manual and show you what BWM recommends we use when filling up. In my first comment I implied that an owner of a performance based BMW should be using higher tier gas without question.

There were lots of helpful posts before you ignored all of it and asked the question a second time, in a different way. There were even helpful posts after that.

Let me ask you another question:
Should I stop at a red light? It says in traffic law that I should, but it would be so much faster if I didn't!

Same thing with the minimum 91 RM/2 octane notice on your car behind the gas filler door. It's listed as a minimum, not recommended. Recommended is 93. Just do it.

No where around here has the price difference that small. Typically $.30 to $.40 with Costco sometimes being the exception at around $.18 to $.25 (and that's not consistent...I've seen them at $.30+ as well).

That's not true either. You want to run the lowest octane possible without having knock occurrences. That will get you the most power/fuel mileage. Going under that need will caused pulled timing where you need it most = lower fuel mileage and power. The proper answer is to use the octane needed for the specific application.

This is the dumbest thing I've read... Urea is for diesels. OP, just get the 87 octane, run in and get a bottle of NOS energy drink, and top off the tank. I heard Full Throttle works too, but not unless you're wide-open-throttle the whole time.

2 M4s should do some side by side runs, first both cars run 91, then one car runs 87, then other car runs 87.

I would be far more interested in multiple cars, multiple conditions and then also determining fuel mileage loss. I don't see the above being enough to matter tell much with all of the other variables. Then is the engine avoiding all detonation or cutting back as it detects it (some still occurring)

In the end it's like going to a high end restaurant and buying the cheapest draft beer (not because you like it) so you can same a couple of dollars. If the high end restaurant price is too high, just don't go.

If you bought a new M3 in 2013 (latest year they have), kept it for 5 years and then sold it Edmunds estimates this will cost you about $80k. Basically about $1300 a month. Figuring out a way to make this $1280 a month isn't going to matter.

Most cars built in the past 10-15 years have knock sensors, little gadgets bolted to the block that will pick up knock and send a signal to the control computer. They're capable of detecting knock long before human ears ever hear it. Which is not to say that you will never hear it, after all the computer has to act on the signal, and how/when it does that will determine whether a human will hear an engine knocking.

In short: no, the lowest octane that does not produce audible knock is not the correct one for your car. The correct octane for your car is the one the engineers who designed the engine and control systems tell you to use.
