As someone mentioned, there's space for both the 6 and 8 series. Scott said that the 8/9ers would be positioned even above the 7. Plus, the 6GC sells too well to discontinue its production in the next gen.

Obviously the 6er will shed weight since it will use the new carbon structure like the new 7/5ers, but that doesn't really mean anything about its size.

As I said earlier, for Bmw to make a proper 911 competitor, it would have to be built for this purpose only. Just like the AMG GT is built from the ground up by AMG. And we know that they don't really intend to do so in the near future.

Maybe with the M6 shedding some weight it could come closer to the 911 but definitely it would still be a heavier GT car over a true sports car.

My wettest dream would be a Z8/9 to compete with the AMG GT/911, built by M exclusively.

is it possible that they just make the 8 series a true sports car? something to compete with the R8 and 911. I would definitely rock a small M8.

They need a GC priced closer to the 5 series like the 4GC is to the 3. Let the 8GC take over as the high priced GC.

Looking forward to the Z6M, finally a replacement for my old Z4M. Although probably $30k more than that was.

Probably more in the likes of the S63 than the 911.

Someone please educate me as I'm new to the world of high priced luxury German sports/race cars. Isn't the M6 currently competing with Mercedes and 911s on the GT track???

I've been pondering this since the announcement that the M6 would be the future of BMW Motorsports GT racing. M4 left to DTM only as far as a factory campaign. Makes more sense from a marketing perspective as the M6 GT will be racing the 911 RSR, Vantage, AMG GT etc. Personally I'm pretty bummed to have the "M3" name completely abandoned when it comes to Motorsports.

I like the idea of a 4 seater car for practicality and keeping the S63Tu or a similar very powerful engine. The current M6 needs to lose a bit of weight, we all agree with that but it also has about 52% of weight over the front wheels due to having the V8 up front and the gearbox directly behind it. This means that they struggle for traction at the rear and push too much at the front

The Ferrari 612 and FF (both 4 seaters) have a transaxle as well as the engine set quite a bit further back, behind the front wheels which contributes to 53-55% of weight on the rear wheels.

I'd love to see the next M6 or M8 have a transaxle layout with more weight at the rear than the front and to have it around the 1750kg mark, while still being a 4 seater. It'd be a shame for it to be a two seater, that is the job of the Z series (maybe give the Z5/Z6 an S55 or S63Tu to create a smaller two seat car)

If the new 8 series is designed to compete against the S class coupe and the 6 series is a two seater, I'm not sure what car a lot of current M6 owners are going to move to?

OK, gents: THIS is the big newsflash. SCOTT26 just let slip that there will, in fact, be a coupe version of the Z5. It shall be known as the Z6.

A German Supra! Allllll RIGHTEE then!

Companies trademark brand names they never end up using all the time. Sometimes they do it for defensive reasons (ie: so nobody else takes it from them and creates confusion). The trademarks themselves mean nothing.

I bet they wouldn't end up too far in size, I bet the difference would be the heightened level of luxury.

Unfortunately these trademarks don't mean much. Here is a post I made 10 years ago listing some of those trademarks which were applied for back in 2000.

Oh really. No this has my interest. Please have a conventional drivetrain and manual gearbox option.

I like the idea of a 911-fighter but doing it this way would mess up the lineup. It would make more sense within the current nomenclature to shrink the 6-series slightly to compete with the E-class coupe, add the 8-series to compete with the S-class coupe, and revive the Z8 under the M-division to make a 2-seater 911-competitor. This way, they can keep the GC model that sells well and current 6-series/M6 owners won't have to be forced to move upmarket to the 8-series if they want to keep a GT car.

Either way, I like the idea of a lighter, more powerful sports car and I think BMW is due for one (not including the hybrid i8 or possible i8S). Ideally, they'd make a mid-engine supercar without hybridization, but we can't have everything, can we?

I think that makes the most sense too, keep the 6 as the 5er's twin and have the 8 be something new. Who knows what they'll do though, logic hasn't been a factor in the naming strategy lately
