Did some digging around on the "company" selling the 5D3 for $1349, they're not legit. Which means, I'd still be getting a deal at $3099 CDN, which is cheaper than if I buy from the states. I'm sure if I wait a couple of months when the 5D4 will be announced by Canon, the price will drop a bit more, plus my loyalty discount from my local photography place, I should be able to get it for $2500 CDN.

I think that's a pretty rockin deal. Plus the 24-70 IS lens, I'll have a banging setup.

I've checked my other lenses, most are actually made for full frame, so I'm good to go

I see. You're right about that. So no difference when pixel peeping, i suppose the only upgrade would be depth of field control here (is the high iso performance on the 7d2 better than an old 5d3?)

I think it's high time i sold my 5d3 as well...

I moved from the 5D3 to the 7D2 primarily because of the 10-fps. and the higher pixel-density. I shoot lots of bird-in-flight, focal length limited, even at 700mm, with a 500mm with a 1.4x TC attached.

Up to ISO 1600, the 5D3 and 7D2 are roughly equivalent, but the 5D3 starts pulling away at ISO 1600.

If you don't shoot BIF, then the 5DsR is a better upgrade than the 7D2. It's got almost one stop more dynamic range, with the advantages of full-frame combined with high pixel-density. Alas, the large 80MB Raw files limit shooting rate to 5-fps, which is a drag for BIF. I carry my 7D2 with the 500mm and the 5DsR with the 70-200/f4L IS. I have my wides in a vest, so I can shoot landscape if the opportunity presents itself.

Both are roughly equivalent, with the right lenses, at ISO 1600 and below. For general usage, I prefer the 5DsR, but when I need 10-fps, then the 7D2 takes the lead. I'd say that dynamic rage of the 5DsR and the 5D3 are really close, but the SR gets the nod. The resolution is what separates them and would be the reason to consider and upgrade. If you print large occasionally, then the SR is the way to go, but the III prints really well up to 50" at 240-dpi. AF systems are the same, both very good.

Like most things photographic, it all boils down to what you shoot and how you shoot it.
I have absolute faith in my 5D3 and no intention (at the moment) of changing it. It just works perfectly for me and my night shots.
1000iso tends to be the 'sweet spot' for my night exposures like this one -

I'm thinking of pairing a 6300 with my big white 500/f4. Was there full communication? Was the AF acquisition speed as fast as on a Canon body, or faster? Could you AF at f/8?

Full communication, cool part was that xyz axis gimble thing to align your shots, just a small tad slower on AF, I didn't get to try at f/8, but the size, weight and feel compared to the 6d felt good

I went from a 7D to a Fuji X-T1, best decision I ever made.

Have a 5D3 that hardly gets any use at all now, the Fuji is next level even though it's not a FF.

Been all over the world last year and shot 95% of the time with my X-T1 and 18-55mm.

Pretty much in the same place myself.
I still use my 5D3 quite a lot, especially for my night shots, but I also recently bought a Fuji X-T1 as my 'travel camera' and just love the thing. It replaced a Canon G1X, which had previously been my travel camera, but the IQ and versatility of the X-T1 does, as you say, take things to the next level. In addition to the 18-55 kit lens, I use the 10-24 a lot for big sky images.

I went from Rebel XT, to 50D, to 5D Mk II to 5D Mk III. I cannot imagine what else I could possibly need that the 5D Mk III does not already offer. I don't do any bird photography, or any sports photography for that matter. But for general "a day in the life of" photography, the 5D Mk III works perfectly well. And I'm a novice at best!

Though not ideal, the 5D MkIII can handle sports well, it only lacks the ultimate fps speed. I've even used it successfully for birds, but focal length will require some investment vs. a 7D MkII.

Similar here... I went from Canon Rebel XSI to Canon 70D...
I don't shoot sports or birds in flight... and the 70D does everything I need at the moment. I think lens is the key to upgrading in photography.

I think that's true of most people. Lenses are key. Canon generally reserves it's very best lenses for full-frame (they all work on crop-sensors), but there are some really good EF-S and STM lenses that can give an L-series a run for the money.

I'd kill for an EF-S 600mm f/4 that had L-series IQ. It's doable, but the market would be relatively small, I think. The size and weight savings over an EF would be HUGE.

I was in the EXACT same position last week when Best Buy gave me a $1,400 store credit after my 7D broke and Geek Squad had to replace it. Expect to take a major hit on value/price of your 5D3 if you buy it now. I was stuck between the 5DS-R (which i have now) and the 5D3 and essentially chose the 5DS-R due to the fact that it won't take a hit in price upon the announcement of the 5D4 due to it's entirely different place in 5D line as a specialized piece of equipment. The 5D3 is a 4-5 year old camera and the 5DS-R came out last fall. The 5D3 took a 30% price drop last fall and is going to take another hit/get discontinued when the 5d4 drops here promptly.
If I end up preferring the 5D4 when it releases, I'll take a minor hit on resale of my 5DS-R compared to the financial hit of the soon-to-be ancient 5D3. This decision will be made based on whether it includes 4K video, better low-light performance, and HOPEFULLY a megapixel count somewhere in the mid 30's!

All of this being said, you should honestly sell all of your current lenses and either opt for a 24-70mm 2.8L for the time being and PREPARE for new lenses with whatever setup you'll have in the next few years. In this case, if budget is a super tight squeeze and you're still wanting a FF body, then I'd recommend looking further at the 6D (or the cropped 7D2) and still building a lens collection before even looking at the 5DS line or the 5D4 because either of these cameras are going to require lenses far sharper than your 70-200mm 4.0L (I currently am getting rid of my 70-200mm 4.0L for this very reason on my 5DS-R).

2 other cool additions to consider with the 5DS line is that (1) they have a function that allows me to change the FF to a 1.3 and 1.6x crop which i have found insanely helpful but is still kinda unnecessary cuz of the fact that I can simply crop in during post production with my 50.6 mp.. .which is INSANE by the way. and (2) i can also change my file sizes from a 50.6mp to a 28mp which is great if file sizes are a concern of yours.

In summary, the 5DS line was just simply "checked off more boxes" in my search for a new body and I'm very happy with my decision.

Forgot to add this link in there, which is pretty crucial when considering going to the 5DS line..... AND soon the 5D4. It is a list of all the compatible lenses for the 5DS line and don't quote me on it, but this list will be nearly identical for the 5D4. One lens that isn't included which i and many other shooters believe to be optimal is the 35mm 1.4L.
