Can't comment on the 5.0i, but my friend had a US made '13 35d and my dad had a German made '12 35d. My dad put 75k on it in 1.5 years, no problems what so ever. My friend had 38k in 2 years, had a lot of minor electrical problems.

The engines were bullet proof for both instances. Honestly, I'd get the diesel. For day to day driving, torque really shines. For long distance driving, nothing can touch it. Only problem is the add blue, which is a bitch and a half to replenish in those model years.

Yeah I have been following the posts about BPC. When my extended warranty is up on my 335d I'm getting some work done

OP - remember, DPF and AdBlue can be tuned out....

Neither my Treg or the Jetta use AdBlue (Anymore )

I owned an X6 35i from 2010 and then traded last year to an X6M, both on the previous E71 platform, so very similar to the X5.

I found the 35i satisfactory for daily driver duties, especially after giving it the Dinan stage 2 tune, but the M has been considerably more fun. Loads of power on tap immediately, great V8 sounds, and it feels like it doesn't have to work as hard to reach and maintain higher speeds. The handling has surprisingly felt similar to the 35i despite the weight difference, at least for daily driving. That being said, the 35i was better on fuel mileage and got less interest from people trying to egg on a race. Also, I haven't had to replace the tires yet, but the performance tires that came with the M prevented me from taking it to Tahoe this past season during the chain control days, whereas I had changed the 35i to good all seasons without thinking twice so had no problems with multiple trips up there.

My recommendation is to get the previous generation M with an extended warranty. Depending on age and mileage, cost can probably be about the same as a new X of any variety.

Make sure you drive them all and do your research on extended warranty's both from BMW and 3rd party. My wife had an '11 for almost 5 years and it was more or less reliable for the first 4 years or so then a train-wreck after that. BMW extended had no deductible but covered less items and for less total mileage and was around $3k. 3rd party covered out to 100k but was more than 2x the cost of BMW's (that should tell you something). I wouldn't even consider owning one of these without a warranty.

Not sure how these Ms. Daisy's out there drive but we got no better than 14-16 mpg around town and on its best Olympic moment it might have cracked low 20's on the highway. I honestly think it's so heavy that the V8 working easier might not be much worse.

You're already biased towards a diesel so might as well get one. BPC tune and BDP pipe it and you'll be set. I rode in the BDP X5d and his was pretty fun.

Just sold my 50i, and it was a great daily driver. I had a 35d loaner a few times and that would be my second choice over the 35i.

ALL X5's and X3's are all built in Spartanburg, SC - USA. Even diesel model X5/X3 are built in SC and exported to the rest of the world.

The only X-model built in Germany is the X1, and that is built in Leipzig, bc it shares so many parts with the 1er/2er which is also built there(along with the M2).

+1 on x5d, I have one also. Don't have dfp delete or whatever just piggyback tune and good enough. Works well as tow rig also.

Peter from TuningWerk(in Munich) told me a funny story... he used to own a X5M... a few times each year he needs to go to the Ring and test his products and on customer race days and such. His X5M was making upwards of 700PS... but when he would drive the 1,200 km round trip... he would always drive very fast... he said his X5M would do almost 350 kph! He said Ferrari owners would look at him in disbelief as he blew past them on the Autobahn. But he would have to fully tank up for fuel four or five times for this 1,200 km trip! That gets old quite fast. He then bought a X5 M550d - he saved over 60% on his yearly fuel bills. I think he said he could make the trip on two tanks of diesel now. AND that was bc he had tuned his X5d to produce close to 400PS with over 1,000Nm of tq!! At first it was making more tq but the tranny couldn't handle that much! Top speed was around ~300 kph with his X5d.

I thought the fuel savings was funny... bc here is a guy who can afford fuel... but chose a X5d bc it made far more torque and was almost as fast as his X5M.

My wife wanted to test drive a 2016 Ford Edge Sport AWD w/ 2.7L Ecoboost 315hp/350tq...

It had a decent ride, the power felt pretty good and could comfortably carry 5 people.
