I'm currently driving one now in the UK. IMHO, BMW has nothing to worry about. I requested a BMW 320D and got this Jag XE instead. Not as roomy or comfortable as the 3-Series. For anyone over 6' tall, it's difficult to get into without banging your head and there is precious little headroom inside.

That pop-up, spin-the-dial gear selector SUCKS out loud. If you need to go from Drive to Reverse, which I've had to do may times over here because the Brits make the world's smallest parking spaces, it's way too easy to shift past Reverse and into Park.

The computer system is much worse than BMW's, and that is saying a lot. Just trying to get the useless nav to shut up is a pain. And maybe it's a common feature of all nav systems over here, but this one consistently tries to direct us onto single lane farm roads for miles and miles. We've had to rely on Google maps on our cell phones to get where we want to go.

This one is a 2-liter diesel, so I can't really say much about performance, but the one time I needed it to get up and go so I could pass a tractor hauling hay on a twisty farm road, the car responded like a corpse. I had to mash the pedal to the floor to get it to shift down and go.

There are a couple of features I would turn off if I could figure out how. One is the same annoying fuel saving thing BMW has where the engine stops when you come to a full stop at a light. The other is the lane monitor, which vibrates the steering wheel every time your tires touch a line in the road. The back roads here in Wales are narrow as hell, so you pretty much have to run along the lines in most corners. So the steering wheel is constantly buzzing.

This is also MHO, but I think BMW as the best rain sensing wiper system. The system on my C300 is so-so. Very erratic. Same with the rain sensing system on this Jag.

The backup camera on this Jag is excellent and the parking distance warning system is a godsend here again because of the tight parking, the picture below notwithstanding. And being a 2-liter diesel, the fuel mileage is decent. The avg for the trip is 47MPG, but that's based on an imperial gallon, which is 4-liters as opposed to 4-quarts. So it's not as good as you'd think, but still not bad.

Last but not least, the trunk is smaller than a 3-Series trunk I believe. We have the same two suitcases that we had on our last trip here 2 years ago and that time we had a 320D and had no problem fitting the 2 suitcases and my camera backpack in the trunk. This Jag barely holds the 2 suitcases.

In short, I was faced with a choice between the 3-Series and a Jag XE, I'd take the 3-Series hands down.

I heard from several people that compared 3 series and XE (one of them was a 3 series driver at that time), that Jag is no match for series 3. BMW drives better and has better interior (Jaguar likes cheap plastic).

In addition, why not comparing XE to BMW 4 GC, this is the best BMW has to offer in this class, not series three. Then BMW is a clear winner in every sense, miles ahead of Jaguar XE.
BTW, some weeks ago I have been to Munich, I honestly think there are more 4 GCs on the streets than 3s.

I almost rented a 4-Series for this trip because I thought the extra room would be nice, and it would have. But after parking in tiny spaces and inching my way through impossibly tight garages, I'm glad I didn't have anything bigger than the XE. I can't imagine trying to navigate a parking garage here in a 7-Series. Even finding a usable parking space in an outside car lot would be tough.
