Nah, In south africa it's easy. Drive fast, tint your windows dark...and pump music. No one will come near your car because they think you some sort of gangsta... ;-)

You just have to be vigilent, and stay out of bad area's.

All I need now is the alarm...

Does anybody know where I can find an OEM alarm online at a low price? There are some great DIY instructions for installing one located here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ight=DIY+alarm. by
CC330i I intend on doing it myself if I can ever find a reasonably priced kit.

The alarm is a dealer installed accessory. From the brochure, the vehicle comes "pre-wired for BMW center installation of mobile phone, alarm system and Universal garage-door opener."

The alarm system is plug-and-play but needs to be activated softwarewise (oxymoron) in order to work.

My insurance would only give me a $10 a year discount for the $300-500 alarm system. So, to recoup the cost I'd have to own the car for 30-50 years. Who keeps a car that long?

yeah i am glad i got it. its so freaking loud. after being around weak audi alarms all my co workers were impressed at how loud it was. the part i cant figure out is that when you set it off or activate the panic (trunk for 5 seconds) the alarm never stops! until you press a button on the key. weird... i wonder if it will just keep going, i tried it for two minutes and it never stopped, just kept cycing through...

Here you go:
http://stores.ebay.com/Hunterdon-BMW...enameZL2QQtZkm

They don't always have it, so keep checking if you don't see it.
as of today, 7/16/06, they do have one for $204 and change.

I haven't seen it cheaper that that.
In addition to that, the stealer needs to update software.
DO NOT pay them more than 1 hour of labor for that.
In fact, try to get them to do it for 1/2 hour of labor.

What are you all more concerned with? The car getting stolen for a joy ride/chop shop or that your radio/valuables will be stolen from the car?

With i-Drive, I don't see how the scumbags could steal the radio. It's too integrated within the vehicle. My concern would be someone breaking in and stealing something I've stupidly left in plain view instead of shifting to the boot.

The car is purported to be difficult to steal without the key; there is no keyhole in the dash to break with a screwdriver, the computer keeps it from being hotwired, there is an electronic lock instead of a mechanical lock on the steering wheel. With a blinking clown nose, most thieves will move on to another, softer target.

Should the vehicle be stolen and end up in a chop shop, I've taken precautions for that. The glass is one of the most sought after parts of a car and easily fenced. I've had my VIN etched into all of the glass on the car so. This being highly visible, it acts as a deterent to thieves.

I don't have the alarm installed. However, when I get back to the states I'd want the alarm system simply to announce when it is time for me to pull the trigger .

I totally like that response! I too would want the alarm simply to deter the thieves from stealing something I've left inside. I don't worry too much about the car getting boosted because of the Fob/ push button starter system. Plus the alarm has a feature that sets it off if the vehicle is jacked up or lifted for towing. By the way... here is a pic of my baby!

Question, I don't currently have an alarm, but when I want to open the trunk of the car, I have to hold down the trunk button for a few seconds. If I get the alarm, how would I open the trunk without setting off the panic feature? Hopefully that's not a dumb question...

I think as long as the 4 doors on the car are unlocked, you can just use the handle to open the trunk.

if you hold the trunk for 1-3 seconds it will pop the lid. if you hold it for 4-6 it will set off the panic feature.

Ah, ok. I thought that's how it might work. So, if you are in a panic, your trunk lid will pop open at the same time. Thanks!
