Now the question, how much commercial ads ESPN will put during the race session?
SPEED was horrific in the past, then NBCSN was a bit better (given with 30% live screen during ads), we'll see how much races I'll "missed" during their so called live broadcast flooded with commercial ads. Cannot wait till direct-to-customer feed in the future.

Looks like I won't be watching F1.......ESPN is a shit hole loaded with ignoramuses that want to talk about anything (see politics) other than sports.

I never liked NBCSports / Speedvisions coverage. Only Will was/is at trackside...and he, by far, is the best.
The announcers all sit in the studio half the world away... I've been stationed all over the world and Sky and BBC were (and are) the best coverage. They have announcers, and the budget, to be trackside every race. They also pull the best talent. Not sure if ESPN/CBS will be better / worse, but I am excited for a change...

If ESPN follows the same format that it’s sister channel ABC did when it tried to cover Monaco during ‘Wide World of Sports’, it will be an unmitigated disaster. Announcers who don’t know a fucking thing about F1, and constantly cutting away from the race for stories about the driver’s lives and families.
I know some of you haven’t been thrilled with the in-studio trio of Diffey; Hobbs and Matchett, but these guys not only have true knowledge about what they speak, but are incredibly passionate about F1 as well. I have a terrible ‘feeling’ about how this switch to ESPN is going to play out for us diehard F1 fans in the US. I can only hope my son can set me up with the Sky broadcast via streaming somehow. Word is ESPN isn't using their own announcers...this from www.formula1blog.com: "Update: I did hear from the nice folks at ESPN that the broadcast would be using the F1-produced world feed including announcers who have not been determined yet, which is what NBC and SPEED used if I have my facts correct, and that there would be no ESPN announcers involved in the broadcast. Now this adds a different slant to the situation."

From FOM, an ESPN statement:
ESPN have issued a statement exclusively to this site. “We will not air additional pre and post-race coverage on television. It’s been our experience that the overwhelming majority of motorsports viewers tune in for the race itself.” “We want to attract new audiences for F1 by drawing ESPN fans from one program directly into race coverage. We will not have any ESPN announcers involved in the telecasts.” Continuing their statement, ESPN note “The F1-produced world feed that we will use will have announcers (to be named). We feel that the television product produced by F1 is very good and will serve our viewers well.” ESPN’s statement certainly makes it a more realistic possibility that the over-the-top network for Formula 1 will launch next season." https://f1broadcasting.co/category/f...ne-management/ |

ESPN covered F1 a long time ago, then SpeedVision (SPEED), then FOX. I feared the move the NBC was a mistake, it has been the best F1 coverage IMO to date. All I can say is they better bring the NBC commentator crew! They are great!

Hopefully with ESPN there will be better directing. That was one of my biggest peeves about NBCSN ... the directors never seemed to match the race footage/cameras to the announcers dialogs.
Just about every race you'd hear either Leigh or Steve state "maybe we'll see some footage" and the director seems to totally ignore what they're staying and shows something or someone else. |

Stands to reason that ESPN will only get the world feed as well- so still no control over broadcast footage, and based on earlier reports, no idea yet who will be the voices, or where they will be located.
Based on ESPN's past motorsports coverage I'll just be happy if they stick to the published broadcast times... They have a long tradition of bumping race schedule to show underwater basket-weaving instead... Motorcross has a larger fan base than F1 in the states and ESPN was amazingly consistent about bumping, rescheduling or just simply blowing off scheduled broadcast coverage

If I'm not mistaken wasn't Hobbs fired from ESPN way back when? Plus with his age (although I find him extremely insightful) I doubt he's what ESPN wants ... unfortunately they'll do something stupid like get Danica Patrick as their "race expert". (oy vey) I can see them scooping up Varsha again, which would be cool. Totally bummed that Will and Steve won't be going. I'm really going to miss Will's walk down pit lane, as well as, Steve's engineering insights. Basically I see ESPN's coverage as ... just watching the action. |

Ironically I just put wheeler dealers on and learned of the 'breakup'. That was a great show.

F1 commentators remind me of . . . . an ice skating critique panel.
I also watch "imsa", coverage is improving ! Is there an attendance / watcher reduction for NASCAR?

I gave up on NASCAR years ago. Outside of an occasional "pop in" ... I really don't pay much attention anymore. To me, there really hasn't been any progress with the cars that the viewers can see in the past couple of decades. Other than the rare road course ... it's basic silhouette cars racing in a circle. A giant chess match. The races are getting longer and longer too, making the viewer wait hours for the final payoff. Even thinking about NASCAR, I'm bored already. The only real progression in the sport is the "playoff" system ... which is weak and rather cliche. It just goes to show NASCAR is stuck regarding how to further the sport. Unfortunately the sport has grown so big it has to placate to corporate sponsorships and TV deals.
