I've been waiting well over a year and a half to get my airbag replaced (and still waiting). It will probably be 2020 before they can fix this issue.

The mental gymnastics that some people will go through to defend a brand is... Mind boggling

I'm not suggesting we get out our torches and pitchforks, but this is bad. The failure mode for any electronics equipment should not be "fire". Specifically, electrical engineers go to great lengths to prevent fires.

So yeah, it's good to keep a sense of perspective. BMW is doing the right thing here, but this was a mistake. There's no need to jump in and defend this as some kind of expected result of owning an aging car. It's not.

Now if we can just get them to fix all these Rod Bearing issues on the M3s that would be great..

Agree. Any electrical connector that can cause a fire on its own without tampering is a serious issue. May be a case of bean counters saving a few cents on a tin plated connector design vs. silver plating, crimping vs. soldered connectors, etc. Will cost BMW much more in the recall cost than what they saved with the cheaper connector.

So it looks like ABC News got BMW to smash their heads to figure out these random fires they reported back in May. Its great news they figured it out. Recalls always suck though.

My thoughts exactly. I can't understand why they wouldn't include 2012 e-series on the recall list. Maybe somebody here has the answer to this, but is there any difference that separates Late e-series 335i xDrive 11' from 12'?

I wrote to BMW NA about this when I first read about the recall. They finally got back to me this morning with absolutely no information regarding why they chose not to include 12's. All they had to say was that I have an open recall for the airbag

My blower motor final stage resistor wiring melted together I have pics but can not post, what a pain in the ass that was. I had to cut the wires to drop the motor as I could not disconnect the melted coupling. could have started a fire for sure.
Wait till they look at the shim job I did there, LOL

Flip it around. What kind of 7 year old car would you reasonably expect to randomly light on fire?

Ferrari not withstanding.

Ah yes, the Ferrari Exclusion Principle rears its ugly head yet again

I guess what I'm saying is that it's not acceptable, but understandable. An older car that was built relatively in the beginning of the big electronic push in cars may have some electrical issues.

Plus, my personal belief is that cars, especially "Luxury" brands, are basically made as disposable items nowadays. They're not being designed or built to be used past 10 years because the original buyers usually switch out for newer models frequently. If you want a 10 year old car that's super reliable go buy a Camry or Accord.

I would be more pissed if BMW tried to pretend that they've done nothing wrong while people died. They're addressing the defect, so kudos are deserved for this, IMO.

Nah, this isn't a real problem! I new this would eventually come up. Someone here said "is it a surprise a 7 year old car has electrical problems"......uh yeah that's a problem. My 1984 Toyota Sr5 has less fucking problems and I beat the shit out of it in the desert constantly. There is no excuse for this shit period. Cheap parts yield cheap operation. What an embarrassment for BMW lately.

If your 7 year old car caught fire sitting in your garage and caused your house to burn down perhaps you would be less forgiving.

That’s exactly a scenario that could happen, and BMW wants none of that on their hands. These aren’t electrical gremlins, as in your AC only works if you jiggle the knob, this is serious and potentially life threatening.

It’s very good that BMW decided to own this issue and get it done right.

Not sure if it's a 3 Series GT?

Been a few F30s catch fire in the UK over the last 6 months. Most seem to start behind the headlight and an X series ( X5 I think) started around the glove box last week.

I wouldn't give them a pass either. And no, it's not normal for cars to have electrical issues after 7yrs that result in fire. lol
Well, perhaps Fords ...

PCV heaters are pretty common. Some Volkswagens even have heaters in the breather tubes and no fires have been reported. The folks in Munich have some 'splainin to do.
This affects my 07 Z4 coupe, I hope Beemer owners don't have Kidde fire extinguishers in their trunks.
As I do have Kidde extinguisher in all of my cars.....
Will be spending one this weekend just to see if they work Yikes
and scary shit

My 2006 E90 330i caught fire out of the trunk caused by a short in the headlight wiring hardness I think?

2K+ later and the car was fixed.

Happened while driving on the highway. Dash went out and there was smoke in the rear view mirror out of the trunk. Opened the trunk and it flamed up quickly.

Curious if this problem could have been related to the recall at all.

A fire in the trunk related to a headlight harness? Are you serious? More likely that it was an improperly install battery with a loose connection.

Sounds exactly like an issue with the battery in the trunk and fumes, either from the vent tube or perhaps the battery itself leaked.

I had a friend have this happen in an E36 BMW decades ago. Battery acid went into the tray area, it began smoking.
