Thinking about buying an S2000

As a former AP2 owner who routinely regrets ever selling it, I would definitely drive one first and make sure, to the extent you can, whether it's unmolested. It's still a 10 year old car.

As much as I loved owning one and do honestly regret selling it, I really don't think I'd ever consider paying what the clean ones cost these days. For many people the wanting will be better than the having. Especially if you're lusting after a car that could be 15+ years old and has had numerous owners.

I have one as a track car and love it. Sold my e92 m3 because the s2k was such a better sports car experience (yea I know an m3 isn’t a sports car in the traditional sense). But my S2K even ruined my short GT4 experience because it’s just as fun to drive fast on track.

It’s kind of a boring car to drive on the street because it’s not that fast in a straight line, but sublime when corners are involved.

For me there’s something extremely refreshing about older cars as they feel so raw and mechanical. You feel like you are doing most of the work as opposed to modern cars that have so many electronics in the background. I think if you are the type that likes to feel like you are in control, the S2K is sublime to drive. But if you need 700hp with nannies to enjoy driving...yea not the car for you. I bought mine about 2.5 years ago and it’s still the best car I’ve owned. It’s a purist driver’s car.

Question from someone in a rural area (and thus don't have the luxury of just going and driving both of them): How does a S2000 compare with a Boxter S?

Really depends on which gen Boxster. The first gen feels like driving a Camry compared to the S2K. I drove one back to back before on a drive with a friend.

If you've ever driven manual transmission Hondas, especially the S2000, you would realize really how absolutely shitty the manual is on the M2 (or any other BMW for that matter). I'd go with the S2000 seeing how you already have DDs.

Proud owner of a very early AP1 (chassis number 959, delivered Sept 1999 to its first owner) here and I'd like to also say you're going to love it if you know what you're getting yourself into.

I have mine completely stock bar from some lowering springs that the previous guy put on, and my only complaint is that I'd love the same engine +2 cylinders

But I'm not going to do anything to it, and I'm not going to trade "up" for anything other a reasonably priced Z4M, which have ridiculous prices here.

It's insanely fun, and so satisfying in a nice windy road.

My biggest problem when the weather is nice, is whether to take the M4 or the S2k for a drive, and my biggest complain is that I just don't have enough time to enjoy both as much as I'd like.

Actually a reason of getting a Z4M is the fact that I'd roadtrip it a lot more than the S2k, so I'd get to enjoy it more...
