This thread is interesting.....so, I have some cash on hand in case of a major power outage or something so I can at least get gas and groceries, I have assets that I can make liquid pretty easily but that usually takes a few weeks in reality, I can tap more cash than I can imagine using from lines of credit so for some emergencies that'd work.....having said that, the last ice storm in Ontario had power down for about 2 weeks as I recall.....cash was useless because most businesses can't think outside the box to do cash transactions.....so lets talk. I have a couple of generators, and fuel. We have a pantry with lots of canned goods, and bottled water etc. Although, I can walk 100 yards and have unlimited drinking water (lake Ontario). My house uses gas appliances so I can cook without hydro, and with the generators and fireplace I can keep warm if it's winter.....then I have my protection covered and we'll just leave that at that. Am I a prepper. I would say no, and I prepared, I'd say yes....cash is nice but what is the OP really asking?

Does he?

So you holding or shorting? You got an in on his moves? I've been out from the market for like 8 months since I realized I felt like I knew too much. Tmi working against me!

That makes me a weirdo, but hell no, I won't make a cent by robbing others.
I'm holding. Brought my shares in 2015 and still holding in 2018. With any luck I'll double my portfolio before the end of the year. If I did this in my 20s I could retire by now if I really wanted to.

Lol, pretty sure when I said emergency i meant a medical emergency, loss of job, or quick investment opportunity that requires cash...

For natural disasters, apocalypses and other general mayhem the only tools of value are items of protection, shelter, food and potentially transport. Gas, guns and MREs are the most useful at that point.

I'm a Finn. I've never seen a a weather where a hard wouldn't do, and this just what I have on my account thread.

I honestly don't know what I'd do with petrol if the power went down, all homes here has to be able to be keep warm with furnaces, fire places and so .

For food I have annoying pets, and the woods, and the lakes. Starving in Finland is difficult.

Yeah, buffet and palls ain't holding.

AAPL has been on my stock watch ever since I got interested in the market in the late 80's.

Hate to say this out loud, but I'm just not that in to money.

I think he owns something like 5% of Apple. His latest acquisition caused a spike in the price that hasn't abated despite trump tariffs on China. From what I hear they negotiated some sort of exception for Apple.

Yeah, that's one stock.

Just be careful and keep your head straight.

I recently had a major career challenge. I keep 12 months 'operating costs' in liquid accounts nowadays.

If you think 100k in your bank account is "loaded"...there are issues.

Even Suze says you should have a couple money pay in cash at all times.

As of now 3 things can be concluded-

1) The BP population is not very representative of the USA as a whole as it is generally a more wealthy crowd. This is a very real possibility, I expect this to an extent.
2) Everyone is lying... and / or not really practicing what they typically preach and I would be sure to note all investment advice on this forum w a massive warning (this should be common sense anyhow). People are actually hoarding more cash than they usually say they do.
3) The general govt statistics are flawed or spun in someway or everyone in the general population is lying... another possibility.

Depends does cash in the bank count, liquid assets in investments, stuff you can sell. I would say only cash you have on hand in your house should count as bank may not be accessible either and having a yard sale during zombie attack sounds like a hard sell.

Right. I have assets I can sell in a pinch and probably would need to get rid of due to ongoing operational costs. I’ve got two motorcycles and three cars. If I had to, could get down to one vehicle and sell the others which would also reduce insurance and tax burden, plus give me some cash for the short term. I keep 2-4 paychecks in checking and I tend not to take all my vacation so would get two months pay that way too. Most of my savings goes to my 401ks.

I also have a generator and food for basic shtf, hurricanes etc. plus weapons f I need to defend or eat.

I would think mostly #1.

As for #2, remember that everyone has a 9+ inch pecker on the internet...

#3, having followed the energy industry for years and seeing the government "data" put out by EIA etc, I generally think their methods/surveys are not very accurate. Having said that think the spectrum of savers is very much dumb-bell shaped with a fairly large population at the upper end of the spectrum with significant savings and a large population at the low end with little to no savings. That spectrum can get a fairly low median number...

I did the diversify portfolio thing for years and made several times more than that when I did the one stock route. Figured might as well go with the most valuable company in the world. Tried bitcoin and crypto for awhile but that was not my cup of tea. I say bet small amounts first then big money if things look good. Certainly better odds at this game than Vegas or Powerball going all in.

If we ever have a true SHTF scenario where we have to rely on our personal stashes of guns, ammo, food, water and other survival supplies, you won’t need a bunch of cash on hand.

Unless you just want something around in case you run out of toilet paper.

OP has said this is not a zombie apocalypse thing, just how much cash you keep around for unexpected expenses/medical/job loss type scenario.

I do keep plenty ammo though just in case!
