Sounds like between the new plant in Rossylyn SA and the new one in China for the LWB X3, it will soon be zero.

This distributive form of negotiation works great when there's only 2 parties splitting up the pie. Unfortunately this is a much more complex situation where the Chinese will have similar alternatives that will cost less.

Exactly. The other European and Japanese manufacturers will sell their cars in China. Without having to increase their price.

Prior to May of 2018, wasn't China already charging a 25% tariff on US made Car imports? Then due to pressure from the US, they reduced it to 15% temporarily until this article yesterday that it is going back to 25%. So it seems it's just back to what China was always charging and therefore should have no added impact? So no one seemed to worry about Chinese demand for BMWs over the last decade of 25% tariffs. I know there are a lot of Trump haters here, but he is ultimately trying to get that 25% down which would help BMW and the USA. It seemed to temporarily work back in May and I'm still optimistic that when this is all said and done we will overall be in a better place with reduced tariffs that will have a positive impact on Americans.

It's 15% + 25% for ex-US, so 40% total.

All the assembled X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 and X3L PKD's come from Spartanburg.

Tough to read that explicitly. BBC just says 25% and not that it is additive.

That being said, there was a 25% tariff for a decade and no one seemed to care about the impacts American workers. It was just accepted. I wish everyone was this vocal then.

And of course China does a bunch of other bad stuff so glad to see someone pushing back finally.

It's an additional Country of Consignment Import duty of 25%. Base rates and rules still apply.

That would be great for the town honestly, it revolves around the plant. But let’s be honest- which of the two options listed usually happens with business? (The close down and outsource one).

As much as I dislike the approach the president has taken with respect to trade, I would never actively root for the failure of an entire town and it’s people just to be right. All the luck to Spartanburg!

WOW is this a big problem!

IIRC the US has a 2% tariff on Chinese produced cars, while China has 25% on US cars. So where has everyone been crying about BMW lost profit and jobs with the 25% tariff (vs. 2%) ALREADY imposed on BMW USA-produced X-Series...

Because it was taken into consideration when BMW tooled the plant. There wasn’t job loss in Spartanburg. They’ve been doing quite well and while i haven’t googled it I think i remember them expanding operations.

In the past Spartanburg has produced the E36, the Z3 and the Z4 (I have two cars produced from the plant BTW). After the E85/86 Z4, the plant switched entirely to the X-Series BMWs. Again, I'd cry a bit harder if the US domestic content was a bit higher than 37%. The quality of the E36 and Z3 was shit coming from the plant in the 1990s.

The President's approach to trade is still a work in progress IMO. I'll decide the validity of the approach once the issue is negotiated and settled. The global-sourced automotive industry is, as it now is, may not fall under the traditional concepts of "trade war" from the past. I'm will to wait and see.

Also what I laughed about was Hardly-Davidson crying about the EU tariff threat. Not many people remember in the late 1970's how hard AMF-owned Harley-Davidson lobbied the Government to impose strong tariffs on Japanese-made motorcycles of 750CC or above. President Reagan imposed those tariffs on the Japanese industry and saved Harley's ass. The poorly-run AMF H-D would have gone bankrupt had the tariff not been imposed. That and the great economy of the 1980's.

I can respect the watch and wait approach. Totally agree how the tables have turned on HD. Ironic they’re moving major production and hurting badly when they forced the same approach decades past.
