And as far as seizure of personal property, its not only you. Even US citizens are subject to that.

To answer your question about whether I was Driving after having Drinks or whether I was significantly above the speed limit the answer I have is that " I wanted to be a Police officer in this country so there fore I never did any thing Stupid which will come to haunt me in my dream Job" I am an Immigrant to this Country and when I was in 18 I lived in a place where the only punishment you get is death. So I can tell you this I never did any thing stupid. - However I am not a saint. I am proud to be a Canadian. How will I feel if I was turned away when I have a invitation, well my friend in my job (IT) there is plenty of jobs in US however when we have a Job offer letter and when we go through your immigration more than 50% of us get turned away. For what? We don't know. I can tell you this it is not because of our Education not because we have a Reckless driving record and definitely not because of Criminal record. The simple reason what we get is your education is not recognized in US. I think if I am good enough to work in Canada what is the problem in Working US? Do I get mad at your Country ? Do I come out and say that we should ban US ....blah...blah....no. Some times Rules are rules and you follow them. |

Neither Canada or US is perfect and both our border securities can seem absurd, unfortunately in an attempt to control entrance into both our countries, peoples relatively small mistakes can often be exploited to refusal of entrance.
If there were murderers trying to get in I am sure we all might think diff. but they never established clear enough rules |

I wouldn't expect Canadian customs to do that too. I'd expect them to tax him on his pants or something. Canadian customs is about revenue.
FWIW, having lived 10 years in the US; US immigration is a lot more inconvenient, but I guess that wasn't your point anyway. P.S. I should tell you guys the story about how when crossing back into the US with my American wife US immigration took her into a private room to ask her if I'd kidnapped her. That's only the beginning! |

I actually remember covering this in one of my classes. Canada Customs (and US Customs for that matter) don't give a damn whether your conviction is a criminal offense where it occurred or not, rather if they view it as if it had occurred in Canada. Reckless Driving in Canada is a very serious criminal charge. It is usually reserved for the very very stupid. Your average yokel doing something stupid would likely get charged under the Provincial Highway Traffic Act with "Careless Driving".
The Criminal Code in Canada is national in scope, unlike the US where each state has their own criminal code. Your friend is a victim of non-uniform verbage. What is in California a very minor charge is actually a very serious charge in Canada: on paper. Thus what happens is that the border guard sees "Reckless Driving", looks it up as a Criminal Infraction in Canada and denies your friend. Simple as that really. EDIT: I should add, from what I am aware of the border guard does not have details of the infraction thus can't make an exception. He sees a reckless driving and has no idea whether your friend was heavy on the happy-pedal or whether he mowed down a group of pedestrians with is car (well, there would probably be more charges but the point stands).

As an American who has been going to Canada all my life to stay at our family cottage, I'm embarrassed by some of the comments made by my fellow Americans above.
I'm sure the Canadian customs are just responding to the increased hassle factor provided by US customs on the Canadians. No reason for ignorant comments here. Since 80% plus Canadians speak English as their first language, what's with the French comment? I don't get it.

I can't even believe any American would come on here complaining that a friend of theirs got hassled at the border and was denied entry. My friend was a cardiac surgery resident who was training and living in Canada for four years and paid to attend a course in Salt Lake City, Utah. He asked US customs in advance for what type of visa he would need to attend the three day course. They told him he needed a 3 month visa which he obtained. When he got to the border? Denied entry because they said he actually requires a 6 month visa to attend this 3 day course. BS Real reason: my friend is middle eastern from Libya. What really annoys me is why they don't just come out and say it. They really have no shame. |

Nobody's perfect, and I'm certainly not saying Canada's without fault whether it be with respect to border crossing or any other subject, but there was no call for some of the comments made against Canada in this thread. As I think GMach1 said - some of us happen to love our country too - maybe its not quite as universal as it may be in America, but its still there. I vote for this thread being closed down - its not providing any benefit to this great forum. |
