Saw this post and instantly thought of the new Toyota Supra! Toyota, who is one of the largest companies in the world, thinks it's too expensive to develop an all-new straight-six for the Supra. And here we have little Mazda, who can find a way to justify a naturally aspirated straight-six.

Also, it seems like this engine is for "large-architecture" cars, but can you even imagine what the Miata would be like with this engine? With a 2,700 lb convertible , ~250HP N/A straight-six, 6-speed manual, 7,000 RPM redline, and a starting price of just under $40K, Mazda could take my money no questions asked.

I would love to add a '19 MX-5 to my stable. When I read about the inline six in development, my first thought was wondering if they would also find a way to put it in the MX-5. Spreading the new engine across multiple product lines should certainly help with development costs.

Back in the late 80’s there was a company that shoehorned the Ford 5.0 V8 into miatas and make hot little monsters. That obviously was a different sized miata and the 302 V8 Ford is shorter then a I6.

Because those long-rumored inline-six engines are finally happening. Without further ado, there will be a 3.0-liter e-Skyactiv X engine promising to deliver "smooth acceleration and an engaging sound." It is important to note this is still a naturally aspirated engine as its larger capacity helps it push more air without having to resort to turbocharging.

Then there's the 3.3-liter e-Skyactiv D, an evolution of the smaller 2.2-liter unit bringing an "increase in the speed range at which lean burn is possible." The engineers have made better use of surplus air by developing egg-shaped combustion chambers dividing the air-fuel mixture into two areas within the piston bowl. Doing so improves combustion to deliver quicker acceleration and cut NOx emissions at higher rpms. A greater lean-burn area is achieved, consequently reducing unburned residue to a minimum.

Even though the inline-six diesel is physically larger than its four-pot counterpart, its simple structure offsets the weight penalty. So much so that Mazda mentions it's just about as heavy as a regular four-pot diesel. Much like the gasoline mill, the oil-burner benefits from something called "M Hybrid Boost." Essentially, it's a 48V mild-hybrid setup to cut fuel consumption and emissions as well as support the combustion engine from a standing start.

Both inline-six engines have been conceived to work with a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission that lacks a torque converter. Instead of a hydraulic converter it relies on a multi-plate clutch for quicker and smoother gear changes. Its compact size has allowed Mazda to make the transmission tunnel space smaller to free up room in the pedal box for a better driving position.

The CX-60 is just the beginning of Mazda's SUV onslaught as it will be followed by a widebody CX-70 for the United States. In addition, a bigger three-row model known as CX-80 is slated to arrive in Europe, while an equivalent CX-90 is destined to hit stateside with a wider body. All four will use the new platform, which we're hoping to see on the next Mazda6 sedan as well.

2.5T underpowered? For the mainstream segment it puts out decent numbers.

Mazda6 is pretty much slowest in the segment. According to Car and Driver, Honda Accord with smaller 2.0T 0.6 sec faster to 1/4 mile. Also slowest in this video:

The 2.5L has a tiny turbocharger as Mazda opted for low RPM torque over a broad powerband. I don't think it's necessarily a bad decision for the majority of people that buy these cars to commute but it's far from a sporty engine.

Not that I care too much about numbers in a daily driver, but from my test drive of a CX9, I thought the engine was quite nice. I was pleasantly surprised by it, especially in a big SUV.

We used to own a CX9 a few years back, and while it was not the fastest in its segment, it was fast enough and the higher torque number really helped when hauling around our 3 kids. The transmission was a bit rough, but it was also the first model year of the new CX9. I'm sure it was improved in the years following.

Mazda's strong suit has never been their motors (13B-MSB is pretty much the worst offender of this), what you need in a daily driver is passing power, which this does plenty fine for the segments they are in. 0-60 time is irrelevant for majority of the population and only matters on a spec sheet

What Mazda has always done well is handling, intangible factors, this is the highlight for all their current and past cars.

What Mazda has always done well is handling, intangible factors, this is the highlight for all their current and past cars.

In the 80's and 90's they build some pretty solid engines as the 2.3L turbo in the MX6 (Ford Probe) and the next gen 2.5L V6 in those cars were solid engines. I once owned a 1989 Mazda 3GT with the B6T 1.6L twincam turbo engine and that thing was indestructible and peppy for that time as well as fairly advanced.

I know when I'm worried about 0-60 times and 1/4 times, I always choose large, boring 4-door sedans.

I own a CX-5 turbo. As a daily driver it has plenty of power. There are several reasons why it has been a Car and Drivers top ten.

It is going to be a vehicle that we own for quite some time.

We liked the NA version I had as a loaner car a while back. If it could tow more than a small utility trailer we would have likely already purchased one.

I'm a big Mazda fan. I think between me and my ex-wife I've owned 7-8 Mazdas.

We've got a 2022 CX-5 on order. Honestly, I found that 2.5 liter turbo to be more pleasant & responsive to drive than any of the B48s I've driven (so far). Of course, there are engine tuning and vehicle differences.
