Yeah, I'm only 42, so I guess "not that long ago" needs some context. I kind of forgot I'm in a car forum, not a watch forum, so knowledge of watch history shouldn't be assumed. My bad.

My point is simply that lots of formally utilitarian things, from watches to "work boots" to Land Rovers, have now become luxury status symbols, so I guess it makes sense that G-Shock is working towards that, too.

I mean, there is even a solid gold, $70K G-Shock!

Sure, the watchmaking industry is maybe 300-some odd years old and the clockmaking industry 1000 or so.
But rolex isnt around that long as a watchmaker. In rolex' history, 67 years (ago when the subby was launched) is also quite a long time ago.
Rolex isn't Breguet.

But still then rolex was a luxury brand, being swiss and having an arsenal of gold watches, automatic watches (also uncommon back then) and such.
The submariner was an early waterproof watch, something which still quite uncommon in the 50's, and therefore expensive.
It wasn't a brand the average man (joe worker in the car factory) wore or posessed, so definately not the g-shock of its day's.

Sure it was. Lots of working men saved up for a Rolex back then. I’m not saying a Rolex was inexpensive, but lots of military and dive teachers wore Rolex watches, just like they did G-Shock 30-40 years later. A Submariner was $230 in 1970, which equates to $1530 today. Not cheap, but not $8k. To put that in perspective, the Porsche 911’s price has risen to a bit more than double its price since 1970, accounting for inflation, but a Submariner has risen to over 5x its price in that time. After the quartz crisis, Rolex prices started accelerating.

Now we have $8k, and even $70k, G-Shocks, which is wild.

But those are excessive models, just as there are excessive rolexen. Even back then.
An average G shock still doesnt cost 1500 bucks but rather 200 (they start at 100 I think?), so there is still that 750%+ price difference.
I don't call that being in the same league.

But yes, rolexes have gone up in price exponentially if that's your point. That goes for probably more luxury brands but rolex is definately one of the hottest items right now in watchland.

it looks really nice but i don't feel like this type of watch can be appreciated for the price unless it's doing some Ironman's computer Jarvis type of stuff.. at least meet me at google/alexa level technology.

Yeah, all I'm saying is that, due to the quartz crisis, Rolex sport models transitioned from being tool watches to purely luxury items over time, so this could be the beginning of something similar from Casio.

Sure, you can still buy basic G-Shocks, but there's been a huge wave of higher end collaborations with various designers over the last 5-10 years, and those are usually limited editions that trade for several hundred, if not thousands, of dollars. It's a bit like the Supreme brand.

GShock wont go the same way. Their bread and butter is cheap, affordable heavy duty watches.

What they are seeing and capitalizing on is that a lot these newer generation of watch wearers are more into the designer name than the actual watch itself. So where you or I or any other watch collector sees casio and g shock, they see the designer.

Agreed about the collaborators/designers. That being said, Japan sees branding a little differently, which is why the Japanese wisely created Acura for the US, whereas it’s still a Honda NSX in Japan. Like Seiko, maybe we’ll eventually see some kind of “Grand G-Shock.”

I have the Rangemaster Ocean Magma Edition and it huge but I love it. I'm not a little guy so I think it works for me. My wife thinks, not so much.

Its my go to for active activities. Recently came in very handy on a Hike/canoe trip with my son. Barometer helps predict bad weather and compass was super convenient although I had a old school one because I was not sure of my new toys accuracy. Ended up being right on.

NHK a global news outfit out of Japan recently (presently rerunning) two excellent pieces: 1) on Seiko’s discovery of a quartz movement watch. 2) on the initial product design of an impact proof watch the first G-shock.

Couldn’t find the video: the salient facts are - not sure how they discovered a small piece of quartz vibrates to a small electrical charge but, when they tried to use a battery to a small square shaped quartz it vibrated too quickly due to the short dimension making the register run fast, but they realized a small tuning fork shape the same width-x-length as the square acts as a piece of quartz twice it’s actual length, slowing the vibration and making it calibrate-able. Also if the second hand ran smooth like a mechanical watch the battery ran too fast so the had the second hand run at one second pulses and it lengthened battery life.

The G-shock was imagined when a Casio engineer’s watch fell to the floor breaking in pieces when he shook hands with a fellow worker. In developing G-shocks every component was redesigned that couldn’t withstand a drop from an upper level floor of their engineering headquarters.

I have a few of the higher end analog/digital G Shocks. I don’t dive any more, but some of the functions are helpful when I’m out in the woods fishing. I think they look good too if you choose wisely.
They are my favorites as my daily drivers.

Been a fan of Gshock for quite a bit (owned 4 of them in the last 10 years or so). But recently saw this brand on insta - Zinvo watches. Reached out to them to chat before purchase and they made 1 for me with forged carbon (I guess its coming into production later). Pic below, loving it! Automatic movement and quite a unique watch! Spinning dial looks awesome! Size is 44mm, maybe a bit big on my wrist but overall I love the look and feel!

Like the new G Shock GA 2100 all black. However, I’m not paying twice over MSRP. Some call it the CasiOak.

Although this watch looks good, I still don’t think it is worth such an expensive price.
