Apple added support but BMW has to enable the feature on their side...

Yeah, it doesn't support it today. I'm hoping that it will be supported alongside whatever update is done to add AA support. But that may be wishful thinking we shall see.

Couldn't agree more - the idea of the wireless CarPlay (at least thus far in my experience) - is better than the reality. About once a month in my X5M I have to completely remove my phone from the pairing and re-do the entire process because the car "forgets" the CarPlay feature (while keeping other bluetooth functions in tact).

Hopefully BMW has figured this out for MY2020 cars and beyond?

I've been using wireless CarPlay on my 2020 M4 and it's been pretty reliable in terms of connection. My only issue is that it doesn't see the next/previous tracks in the HUD but that's a minor complaint!

Fairly certain AA is MUCH easier to integrate than AC, as the latter requires some extra hardware, if I remember correctly.
I love how problems w/AC are related to Apple but AA support is related to BMW not AA's support by Android licensees, "The glacial rollout of anything Android Auto"

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019...-after-launch/

Eagerly anticipating the new AA related threads...My phone isn't supported BMW suck...Why does AA require wireless support...etc.

Don't quote me but I'm assuming it depends on the in-vehicle independent data connection to operate properly.

Not every part of the world has a proper internet connection, so it's limited to the countries that currently do.

The vehicle connection is WiFI. The internet connection is the phone. So would be dependent on phone capabilities in that market not car. Car can mirror whatever the phone gives it.

The grip will be the lack of support for AA on the more "price" sensitive phones. Not sure if this is correct but AA is only supported on 8 phones!

Limited Compatibility

From another tech blog:
"The one downside to wireless Android Auto is it will only work with Pixel, Nexus, and Samsung phones"

https://www.xda-developers.com/bmw-android-auto-2020/

So, i am all in with Android and have been waiting for this, but will be disappointed if it doesn't work with my LG or Motorola phones.

EDIT: I assume the limited compatibility refers to wireless connections only... will direct USB connection be supported by BMW for universal Android compatibility?

The BMW APPs (Spotify, Napster, BMW M Laptimer, ect) all stopped working recently in my vehicle and I was going crazy trying to figure out why.

Come to find out that the reason was because my ConnectDrive data subscription had expired and the APP are all dependent on the vehicle's independent data connection to populate, even though it was using my phone data to stream the main function.

Within a few minutes of renewing it, everything was back up and running.

So yes, believe it or not, all APP and interface like CarPlay does use the in-vehicle data connection, to a degree. How do think it validates if you have a current CarPlay subscription.

The phone mirrors and streams the content, like a mainframe dumb terminal.

My guess is since your subscription expired the car refused to except the stream from the phone. To do what you're saying would require the car to use the Vehicle Mobile Number which you would have to activate w/your carrier as BMW isn't going to pay for that. Not sure how the ConnectedDrive Digital Services communicate w/the mothership but would think it's not using cellular.

Yes, after it loads and authenticates, your phone takes over for the main function and it uses your phone's data stream but the initial functions is still dependent on the in-vehicle data connection.

I'm not going to go around in circles, if you doubt me, contact Connectdrive customer service and they'll confirm it.

My point is BMW ConnnectedDrive services use an in-vehicle data connection that is NOT dependent on a cell phone.

EDIT:

Misread your original post as "in-vehicle data connection used by AC vs. in-vehicle data connection used by BC to validate AC subscription"

As someone who works for Apple, I can tell you that CarPlay / Android Auto have nothing to do with in car anything. Even a Nissan Sentra is compatible with these, and that car has far from anything remotely related to in vehicle data connection.

Well, since you work for Apple, you must have all the answers; like where could I find a charger

Look, this is getting annoying now, I give up, you win.

Believe whatever works for you and let's just move on..
