Apparently, in some people, alcohol depresses the muscles that control the lower esophageal sphincter so that it doesn’t close fully, which allows stomach acid to flow out and up. Hence the pain.

There are thousands - THOUSANDS of charlatans out there offering everything from prostate massage to coffee enemas to holistic pills that will cure you if you take them forever. I call bullshit.

If I just don’t drink - I have no problem. Sigh. I had a good run. Over forty years of alcohol enjoyment. I guess it just caught up with me. I don’t really mind quitting - I’ve done it before for years at a time. So here goes nothing again. Say hello to sober me.
And I'm here sitting watching the professional, drinking a $2.89 bottle of Chardonnay from Aldie. Winking owl. Best wine you'll find in the world for the price.

I've been drinking clean wine that's independently lab tested to ensure the chemicals aren't added. It makes such a difference. No more headaches & don't feel like shit the next morning. We went to eat last night with friends & had 2 bottles of Caymus. I woke up with a raging headache & my husband woke up in the middle of the night with one. I've gotten to the point where I bring my own wine to a restaurant & pay corking fees to avoid this. Last night reminded me of why I've been doing this & wont be drinking that again.
This.

This is why I stick to French and Italian wines only. If a French wine maker got caught adding this to their wine they would loose the vineyard. I drink big portions of French win on nights I drink and never feel ill effects. If I ever stray to South American or wine from the US I always regret it.

If going two days without drinking makes you very uncomfortable then there is a good chance you are better off skipping it completely or at the least you used to drink a lot. If you decide you would like a drink, I think an occasional drink or two for lunch or early dinner would have a better chance to not cause acid reflux as the effects would be gone by the time you go to bed (assuming this is when it is the worst).

Congratulations on doing it.

Thanks, but I guess I didn’t state myself clearly enough. What I meant was that the acid reflux carried on for those uncomfortable days, and it gradually receded with each day I abstained from drinking alcohol. Now, on day six, the pain and discomfort are almost completely gone. Perhaps, in a few weeks, I’ll try French or Italian wines, but that remains to be seen. I don’t mind being sober, I’ve done it for years at a time, but I do enjoy wine upon occasion. But not at the price of that acid burn!

OP...great advice here but the VERY FIRST THING you need to do after you read this is set an appointment with a gastroenterologist. Your level of reaction is a bit outsized. I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV but I sold the crap out of Prilosec and launched Nexium when it came out. (Damn, I'm old)

Good luck.

having the same issue lately. Turned 30, and damn the body takes a hit.

of course , if you google it, you have cancer.

I'm not a huge drinker, and hate everything above 10% alcohol, since I really enjoy drinking, and not be drunk... makes sens?
I did not take any alcohol on the week days, and weekend im on coors light, about 10-12 cans / weekend, not more.

This is why it worries me, since i shouldnt be ''burned'' by alcohol. I'm planning to get some test at the hospital , but right now its not something to do with covid.

Let say I take 6 coors , on friday between 7pm and 11 pm, then go to bed. I woke up with huge reflux, and about to burf.

Then, on saterday, on lunch time, I take an other coors, it feels like its burning in my stomach ( a bit like if you have spicy meal)

Anyway, for now ive switched to Molson ultra, 3%, way better, but hard to get the ''cocktail feeling '' around the pool with friends

how about to stop alcohol? well, wont happen, yolo.

I gave up wine a few years ago. I really enjoy it, but the new girlfriend doesn't drink it; so I eventually just stopped buying it. These days, if I want to feel fancy while catching a buzz, I lift my pinky out while I'm smoking a blunt.

Many foods cause terrible reflux... classic examples are wine, chocolate, coffee, citrus juice such as grapefruit and also garlic which personally speaking, is the worst of them all.

Decades of reflux can cause lower esophageal cancer and decades of alcohol/smoking can cause upper GI cancer (tongue, upper esophagus). The problem is that reflux over time will cause your esophagus to "shorten" as chronic inflammation causes it become fibrotic and now you end up with a hiatal hernia which is very common. A hital also makes reflux worse becuase your lower esophageal sphincter is no longer in its normal position and hence reflux will be worse ! Medicines only make your stomach acid less so that it burns less when you do have reflux, but it doesnt stop the reflux. Plus, medicines can have all sorts of bad side effects, chronic PPI use has been associated with early onset renal failure. As you can see, the best solution is to treat your body right and stop the offending agent as opposed to putting a bandage on the problem.

10-12 cans of beer a weekend... at this rate, you will likely end up with cirrhosis of the liver by age 40. You probably already have fatty liver. read about either one online and you'll be scared enough to think twice. I've seen too many kids with similar habits who started in their teenage years and never made it to 40. this weekend when you open your second can, just remind yourself that you're drinking poison, might as well be rat poision.

Thanks Rebekahb;
What organic wines do you recommend-I've always wanted to try them but have yet to do so...
Thanks!
P.S. Feel better!
This is where I get my wine from. The owner (Sarah who is also a sommelier) of the company visits each vineyard before she will agree to distribute their wine. She learns their growing process along with the bottling process. She also gets the wine independently tested from an outside source. One test is for glyphosphate & the other tests for up to 250 chemicals (mega purple, copper sulfate, ferrocyanide, ammonium phosphate, etc). There are different vineyards from around the world. It's cool to read the vineyard stories on how they grow their grapes. I don't drink organic as they don't use chemicals in the growing process but they can in the bottling process. I am a consultant but only because I order a ton of wine myself. I like that there is no minimum, no monthly fee & I don't have to order every month. Also, if I get a bottle I don't enjoy they will give me a credit or I can replace it with another wine. There are other companies who are up and coming in this like Usual Wines, etc. I've just become cautious of what I put in my body so this is important to me.

https://scoutandcellar.com/wine?u=rebekahb

Each state has its own shipping regulations so you have to select the right one. You asked what I drink so that's the only reason I'm sharing the link. Under each wine it will also tell you alcohol %, what tasting notes, and food the wine pairs well with.

Sassicaia if I am out & have to drink wine I normally try to drink a European wine. Their sulfite content can be up to 210ppm where as in the US we allow up to 350ppm. The wines I drink typically have 50-100ppm & no sugar added ever.

It's something I've learned more about because I didn't realize they put so much crap in wine & without a label you don't know what you're getting. I also appreciate all their packing is recyclable & so are their corks.

Yeah I read his post, my intial thought "welp I'm going to die soon" lol. I could have 10 beers on a Wednesday night in college and the volume would only increase as the weekend neared. If I play a round of 18 I'll be around 10 beers deep.

I hate reflux with a passion but it usually hits me with anything red sauce like pizza, spaghetti and whatnot.

Thank goodness it I'm not affected when I'm drinking coffee or wine ........ those are what I'm having when I'm enjoying ' quality " time with the wife in the morning and late in the evening!
