sometimes i wonder how our ages correlate to what we prefer. Like how often our favorite is just a function of what was out when we were getting into the car game and most impressionable.

I probably fit this more than I'd like to admit. I got into it right after the E46 was introduced and started driving E30's at that time. Thus my one two punch, E46, then E30.

While the exterior of the E92 is not bad and definitely not as bad as the rest of the models from that generation... there's no way it beats the e46 sorry.

I'm also assuming this is strictly an exterior looks competition, because that E92 double hump interior needs to be burned in the fires of hell!!

Great point!

If “M3” wasn’t specified, I’d have listed the 3.0CSL first and 2002tii second (or maybe the 2002turbo) and I prefer both in race trim.

If “M” was specified, then the M1 would come first and I think several M6 variants would beat the M3/4 for looks IMO.

I’ve always liked the e30 M3, but probably because I was well into BMWs by then and it was a real step up for BMW at the dealerships. A lot of nostalgia with that one for me, but I do think the e46 is the best looking of the M3 generations.

I love arugula! You don't even need to put pepper on it because it already tastes like pepper!

All the major BMW design cues that have won them praise for decades are gone. Nowadays its only x5 etc. I even rented it once https://realcar.nyc/rent-a-bmw-x5 and did not like it very much. The front and the rear end don't even match each other and they're from completely different design styles.

Bottom line, it is so different and so obnoxious and that's the appeal. But wait till you put a US license plate on the front or no license plate that all and you will see this gaping bucktooth nightmare that's asymmetrical. Chris Harris described it the best:

"The new M3 and M4 appearing to have borrowed facial features from a yawning rabbit"

We are in the same boat here pretty much, cannot really vote for any of these since I dont find any model to be at least ddecently looking.

Why does your post of my quote talk about renting a X5. I never said that. Who put that in there?

"Even the coolest of M3 design elements throughout history have been pragmatic in nature. For instance, the E92 M3's hood bulge was only added to accommodate the big V8 engine. The F80 M3's killer fender flares were only added to fit the M3's wider wheel track than the standard 3 Series."

The hood bulge was also used for esthetic reasons as well. Basically to signal greater performance/power. Hence why the e46m3 had a hood bulge.

IMO, other than the current iteration, all of the M3's look great except for the F80. I just didn't like the roof line of the F80(30).

The thread is about looks, and I always thought the E90 was so far removed from the E92 especially with the rear lights. They look like two completely different cars.

100%!! its almost right up there with the E39 M5 in terms of perfection. Just a much more aggressive variant of it. Can you imagine if it had a real M motor?
