Illiterate? No. Could you have elaborated more? Yes. Who cares how many versions of a model platform there are. Infiniti only has one G35 sedan. Are you saying that they can not compare/compete with the BMW 3 series because they only have one model? Your argument is still flawed. |

The only reason the old S4 competed with the M is because the RS4 did not exist. Now you compare stock A4 to 325, S4 to 335 and RS4 to M3. It makes sense to me.
Audi's AWD systems in the S4 and RS4 are definately more sports oriented than the XI. This will all change in the next two years when both systems by Audi and BMW take on the current abilties that Acura has (I know that is surprising), but Acura's system will transfer rear power left to right up to 100 % which both standard systems from Audi and Bmw do not. Audi's new rear sport diff does exactly that as well as the new Xdrive system that is going in the X6. I would assume they will adopt it to all the X-drives or my next car won't be a bimmer. |

New S4's pretty sweet. I must confess I'm a big fan of Audi AG in general.
Also, like a few have mentioned, the Audi DSG is the best in the biz and their manual gearbox on the B6 and B7 S4's was slicker shifting than any 3 series ever. Their All wheel drive systems are also without peer. Audi paint is as good as it gets, and to me their interiors are better than any competitors. Gas mileage was the only downfall of the outgoing car. It was weighty but a blast to drive. Plus, above all, Audi's are free from the pretentious stigma that comes along with the roundel... It will be interesting to see what the real world gas mileage returns are...

OK, then by your standards the 2.0L is a direct competitor. I'm sorry, but you're just wrong, because both cars compete directly against the 3 series.

My point is comparisons based on engine power and layout alone are stupid. The A4 is a direct competitor to the 3 series. You can say it isn't, but it is. If you don't believe me give BMW or Audi a call and ask them. Using your logic, an Elise doesn't compare with a Cayman, because it has significantly less HP and a different engine layout. Ask me which one I'd rather drive around a track. Last edited by radix; 10-20-2008 at 03:16 AM.. |

The 328i was compared to the G35 in Car & Driver and in their OVERALL comparison they declared the 328i the winner despite the HP difference. Using engine power and layout is a meat head comparison.

They're not 1:1 competitors. The S4/S5 fills in the niche between the 335i and the M3. They compete, but it's equally as fair to compare it to a 335i as it is to an M3. It's really just up to opinion and debate, but the bottom line is that there's no direct comparison.
M3>S4/S5>335i>3.2>328i>2.0t *imo*.

E.g, If I go to Edmunds and click new cars -> luxury -> sedan -> compact -> 35k - 45k, the top two entries are the Audi A4 and the BMW 3 series, followed by the Lexus IS 350, the Saab 9-3, and the Volvo S60. Note the C class is considered a midsize sedan by Edmunds. Last edited by radix; 10-20-2008 at 06:18 AM.. |
