If taxpayer dollars are not for repairing a road that's been destroyed by a natural disaster, then what are they for? I'd say that every option other than repair will cost more than the repair in one way or another. I'm not sure permanently closing part of SR 1 is a good idea. Digging out and shoring up the hillside is very different than the damage this time where they have to fill in that hole and shore it up. To me the fact the soil slid/eroded away is a great concern with any attempts to repair that road.

Every time I see one of these, it reminds me of the I-40 bridge collapse. I had been looking for a clean 300ZXTT for 7-8 months and found a clean one down in OK and went down to see it. I decided to buy it and went down a few weeks later with a buddy to pick it up and drove it home. I went over this bridge both trips - so 4 times. When I heard about the collapse I looked it up and called my buddy that helped me and asked if he'd heard about the bridge on the news which he said he heard something about it. I then explained to him that was the bridge we just drove over a few days ago!
Crazy.

Option A: Repave 10,000 miles of deteriorating public roads that serve millions of taxpayers Option B: Repair a piece of a scenic one-lane highway that serves a handful of taxpayers. You can't have both. Your choice? |

But we're already doing both...? Why doesn't 10,000 miles of deterioting roads include this portion of the highway? Explain to me like I'm five plz.

I jokingly replied "bridge" earlier in this post.... I think when all is said and done they will simply cut a road into the new coastline and there will be a new curve in the road.

We do? Have you driven in the US? Our roads are crap, and the existing funds barely cover the most necessary repairs.

Our roads IS crap I agree, but there is a constant state of construction everywhere. If people are saying that this can all be fixed at once--I seriously doubt we have the resources to fix all roads at once. i.e. the I-5 section all through Stockton took several years to complete. The money is there, but the manpower--eh, not so much. Am I wrong in this assessment? |

The U.S. has been underfunding its highway system for years, resulting in a $836 billion backlog of highway and bridge capital needs. The bulk of the backlog ($420 billion) is in repairing existing highways, while $123 billion is needed for bridge repair, $167 billion for system expansion, and $126 for system enhancement... |

Not sure they can do that. Looks like they might need to acquire land/easements, and environmental permits? Will be interesting to see the politics unfold on this one.

Not an engineer, but why fill in the hole instead of going around it? Then it's the exact same problem of digging into the hillside.

Going around it how? This would require a bridge. A bridge which needs solid ground to have footers anchored to. That hole was generated from rain that caused instability in the soil which created that hole. This is why I mentioned whether that entire area is geologically stable or not. To me it appears not. This is the same issue with many of the homes along that coast which were built on hillsides for the view.

Yeah, probably hasn't changed much, but I did hear during the pandemic they upped the pace on repairing roads. But who knows. |
