We have RFID badges at work, and then there's CA on the car, so I looked into it. I might try to install this in a garage - it doesn't work with a deadbolt, but there are RFID systems available:

+1 The multifunction fob will never take off. All the features are already or will soon be available in cell phones.
BMW should make an app the installs on an iphone/BlackBerry that can be used as a comfort access fob. Can you imagine a smart fob left with a valet?

Not when you loan your car to a friend or relative. I would say 99% of people never give a valet key to a valet. They get the real keys or fob.

The model in the pictures may just have small hands, but that thing looks huge! With most people already carrying a mobile phone and/or PDA, who would want yet another chunk to lug around. I'm all for simplifying things, and wouldn't mind a single device, but that should be my choice as to what it is. As others have said, BMW should work to make it possible to use an iPhone/BlackBerry/etc. as a key instead of trying to add extra functionality to the key fob.

Exactly! Just like whenever my credit cards become expired i will completely shredded them to pieces for that peace of mind(regardless of how safe and privacy-oriented the credit card companies claim to be) . Can i smash the key fobs and ask for the new owner to go get some new ones from the dealer?

I think you would find that there are a lot of security features attached to such a device which hasn't been mentioned in the release. I don't understand why everyone is so negative on this. People were also so negative when credit and debit cards became released. This would be a great medium as we move to being a cashless society. It probably wouldn't be out for 5 - 10 years time (min) where it would be released to a trial number of people like all 7 series owners. Their feedback will enable improvements which then progress to the masses. Technology will continue to evolve and change the way we work. The smart people embrace it and make it work to their advantage.

I think if you dont trust your dealer or friends or relative, that would be a sad day in America, and can say its time to commit suicide

Or..you could call and get your key fob put on hold. And there are other ways to verify..like having your photo come up everytime you swipe your fob. |

( not speaking to all, but you gotta admit america is getting lazier and lazier)
