Oh and MacBook FTL. Macbook Pro FTW.

Now onto her problem, you sure it is in downloads? As by default it should have gone into the documents folder. Anyway, you might have accidently changed the format of the document. To change it, move the document to the desktop then "right" click it by hitting control then click, and go to "Get Info". Then you should see a category called, "name & extension". Change the extension to a .rtf( standard format TextEdit uses when saving a document) or .doc. TextEdit should be able to open it then.
