This was a feature I came to love in my MB. When I test drove my X3 and asked the salesperson about it, I was told BMW didn't do anything like that. Same from the genius when I picked up my car. I discovered the hold button on my own.

Undoubtedly. We have two mercs and two BMWs and I hate that the BMWs don't have that brake hold feature the way Merc does. Our Audis didn't even have brake hold. You has to use the parking brake at stop lights to free your right foot.

At least a small comfort and thanks here for you: At night (and rain, fog), this way your brake lights don't cause the eyes of the driver behind you to bleed at a long-lasting stop light or railway crossing. Esp. glasses wearers told me of their according problems.

No way! Audi doesn’t have it at all? Is Mercedes the only company that does it this way? It’s a small, but great feature that’s missed.

If I could only own one car right now it would probably be the GLE 63s Coupe. Fast V8 and comfortable, but the 53 is a good compromise since I have the M8 now. It’s plenty fast and actually good gas mileage being an inline-6 turbo.

Porsche application of HOLD is identical to MB. To disengage HOLD on Porsche, the accelerator needs to be pushed, there is no un-HOLD with the brake pedal as on MB.

Strange VAG content decision of not offering HOLD on Audi but including it as standard on Porsche.

VAG, (VW, Seat, Audi, Skoda) have been using Auto-Hold for years, works like the BMW.

when i need brake hold i press it with my left foot. i practice braking with either foot anyway.

I can see how it can be a problem. But I think personally I'd rather see the brake light of a car stopped right in front of me than not see it. I've seen cars with malfunctioning brake lights stopped at traffic lights when I was coming up to it and it confused me. It's a weird feeling that I can't explain.

I should have clarified that post by me. Audi cars in North America don't have auto-hold. They have it in EU and Asia and elsewhere. North American cars don't get auto-hold for some reason even though their younger sibling, VW, has it in their cars.
Also, I read in another forum that Lexus also has auto-hold the way Merc does? I'm not sure since I've never driven a Lexus.

In your situation, a simple fix would be having the ability to turn brake hold on/off while it is engaged in reverse gear. Very annoying when I try to parallel park into a tight space and need that couple inches of space.

I would agree that BMW's implementation of brake hold does kind of suck vs MB or Porsche's.

I found it much nicer having to press the brake a little firmly to activate hold when I WANTED vs BMW's always on approach. Having to press a button to deactivate to pull in or out park of tight spots is a hassle vs just being able to press the brake harder to use it when YOU want.

My garage spot is tight. So I have to inch in at times. Having my car apply brake hold when I dont want it too is annoying in this situation. And having to press a button to turn it off is not my preference.

Interesting. Porsche (VAG) does not work like BMW.

Rather, it works like MB except for the drive-off feature. MB has the ability to un-hold by pressing the brake pedal again before driving off. Porsche has no such feature, the un-hold requires drive off via accelerator pedal.

Just thinking out aloud, does Porsche (or Mercedes) have the drive off assistant? If not, that may possibly influence how Auto-hold is set and triggered.

BTW, the Porsche function seems a better application than Mercedes. Both are really manual forms of Brake-hold, (rather than fully automatic), manually applied and released each use.

Porsche has drive off assistant (traffic jam assistant). Not sure about MB.
