I remember a story out of New England some years back where a woman was charged with manslaughter after she lost control of her SUV at night on black ice and hit a tree, killing her passenger. The police used OnStar tracking for evidence. |

With BMW, look into MULF data. There is no interaction with the DME I am aware of.
Any vehicle computer that can do 'over the air' updates could be remotely deactivated. That's been covered fairly heavily in car hacking. It seems we forget that automobile travel is a privilege and not a right. There are a great many of us who've abused that and basically ruined it for the rest. Impaired drivers account for the vast majority of traffic incidents, directly or indirectly. Saving lives is the FMVSS's job. Seatbelts, SRS, autonomous braking, collision avoidance, etc, etc. This is just another tool they want to use to reach the zero deaths goal. I have averaged around 20,000 miles a year and can tell you that in my little half a million or so miles traveled so far that I should have not driven a handful of times. Someone should have taken my keys. |

I know that for a fact. My brother rented a car from Hertz (a franchise location) and a tracker was apparently set to alert if going over 100mph. He had to immediately return the car. We he shouldn't have been doing anyway. I have trackers in all of my work vehicles that monitor everything. |

If driving was a privilege... we'd see far fewer cars on the road...but that's not how America works...

Yes, which is why most laws are unconstitutional. One should be allowed to yell "fire" in a theater when there isn't one, but if they do, there should be dire consequences. The problem with society today there are no consequences, just excuses.

I’m fine with it. Too many morons on the road driving drunk. I would sacrifice my rights or whatever to bring drunk driving deaths down.
Your odds of dying in a car crash is 1:100. That’s insane |

So the question is, if driving is a "right" there would be no requirement to obtain a license?

Has this caused you to reduce the number of trips you take by automobile?
It would be interesting to see the odds for different parts of the country (e.g., MSAs). I'm inclined to think it consistently varies by a fair amount, but maybe not.

I'm thinking from this that they can track you, but if they could deactivate the car then they would have done it.

I'm sure GM and all the other car makers know this. They just won't do anything as a standard feature if they can charge extra for it unless they're forced to do so.

To be fair, they'll jump on anything that they think will sell more cars, but there really isn't any buzz for anything besides the 'bigger is better' hype; safety is just totally uncool. I don't think I've ever seen a car review highlight safety features - at least not for performance cars. Occasionally you'll see something in a Volvo writeup, or rarely for people-movers (minivans and utes). But slap on a set of +1wheels and add 10 HP and you've got BRAGGING RIGHTS.
