At some point, if you’re having to make concessions like that, it takes away from the experience/value.

BMW HUDs are the best. Can’t wait for this next version.

Wouldn’t mind the physical buttons back… as for the HUD, I wear polarized sunglasses, which means I can’t see it anyway.

See the posting earlier in the thread from this morning. Solid recommendation for top quality HUD compatible sunglasses with zero loss of vision, etc. even though non-polarized. The PRISM lenses are Oakley's next gen and polarization not needed.

Fk me. Are people actually having a discussion about polarized sunglasses in relation to HUD? Yeah lil Umfufu in Africa who is starving totally understands that's worth a discussion because it's an insurmountable problem to overcome.

I’m not sure I even consider this a HUD, because a HUD displays the information much further forward than the windshield. This displays the information ON the windshield. I’d call this an on-glass display.

Yeah, he’s probably not on the BMW forum either.

I sense sarcasm. I understand the workaround. I’m saying that a German luxury car shouldn’t require a workaround. My only point was that they shouldn’t EXCLUSIVELY display vital info on the HUD if that issue exists. I didn’t say it’s a bad feature or shouldn’t be there or a wast of money. I enjoy the feature.

[QUOTE=bloozemanAZ;29707350]Yep but that depends on the vehicle. In my wife's X5 never had issues with my Oakley polarized black iridium lenses. However, when I got my M850i it was a no go. I surmise it is the windshield slope that makes the difference.
In my X5, my polarised Oakleys barely show the HUD, so it’s not as B&W as people may think. If this is the way forward then fine but they had better make this new HUD replicate and not replace. |

Unless HUD can detect pot holes and road debris in front of me, I’m not using it here in LA. It gets in the way visually. Next.

Perhaps they've changed the HUD itself between iD6 (in my wife's 2017 X5) vs iD7 in the 2019 refresh.

![]() But in reality HUD vs sunglasses has a lot of variables. 1. Angle of inclination for windshield 2. Type of polarization in the view H/V 3. Type of polarization in the glasses and orientation of lenses in the frames. Some sunglasses have circular polarization. But this is definitely a "first world" problem.

Its just the way the physics of it works. The HUD is a projection and polarized glasses change the angle in which the light is perceived. Unfortunately, they work against each other. I love my HUD and its great esp for navigation and able to change radio stations/pick songs without using the I drive controller or touch button. IMO, using a non polarized sunglasses (there are some good ones out there too) to be able to use the HUD is totally worth it. They are now used by Pilots as the FAA recommends against using them. So there are some great options out there if you wanna have the best protection and use the HUD. As for me, didnt make sense to spend a lot on something I dont use much but for those who do, they r available.

What are you driving? Seems like there’s some difference depending on the angle of the windshield. I’m in a 5 series but the SUV drivers seem to be able to see it better.
I can see it faintly, most of the time. But I have to focus so hard that it cancels out the purpose, because I can’t focus on the road at the same time.
