Except that the ZF is a RWD transmission and will not fit.

Any RWD based car. The 8AT is for longitudinal mounted motor, the X1 is FWD based with a transverse engine. Zero chance of it fitting without redesigning the entire platform.

The X1 is still using the UKL2 platform, which is a transverse-engine AWD design from the MINI series. Why not just use the previous gen 8 speed auto? It’s not the 8 speed for the x3. I’m talking about the last gen. This DCT from mini isn’t refined like a PDK.

Also, not all U11 X1’s are AWD, It’s the US/Canada market that only gets one choice in drivetrain.

DCT is meant to be more efficient and in some markets that's increasingly important, ironically though in those same markets they have added the MHT mild hybrid that seems to help mitigate many of the issues with throttle and stop/start. Unfortunately they haven't fitted that in the US at all for reasons only BMW will tell you.
Not sure if MPG is less of an issue or that is less of a concern I really don't know. either way it's meant that for some the driving experience isn't quite where it should be. |

Nothing wrong with the DCT, works great. The throttle mapping in Personal mode on the 28i is what’s causing all the hesitation issues.

The hesitation when I drove it was about 2-3 seconds of no response. Almost like the computer calculated it’s velocity and then implemented it. And it was at almost every dead stop. On sport setting same.

I don’t experience this at all in sport mode, only in personal mode. In sport mode the throttle response is almost instantaneous.

You said almost instant- so still the hesitation. Something is telling me it’s maybe not the mapping at all…. I think this Mini DCT must work this way on purpose. |

Applying throttle and clutch engagement produced a significant lag. I have not driven the car in warmer weather. But it was apparent it just kept lagging in many stop and go maneuvering. |

Yes, same as the rest of the US. Yes there is still a tiny bit of lag, milliseconds. The clutch still takes time to engage, so it’s not unexpected. Even with the ZF 8AT in my f32 4 series there was a tiny bit of lag because of the torque converter. From driving it around the past 5 months, I 100% believe it’s the mapping.

I find that approaching junctions at certain speeds it switched the the Battery (Mild Hybrid 48V, not PHEV) and turns off the engine so it almost waits to decide if you really wanted to press the accelerator or not. I feel if you drive a bit more aggressively this reduces. In sport mode, the battery doesn’t engage like this and the engine stays on so it is always ready to go no matter what.

Do you own an X1 currently? Just curious. Also, to add, the car performs much better now than when I first received it. Clutch chatter seems to be gone, the slight jerkiness in shifts I experienced is not really noticeable anymore, and the brakes have smoothed out their engagement. I'm attributing this to a combination of the car ECU adapting to the driver, as well as components breaking in. The car feels very different now compared to the day I got it.

My experience is opposite. With getting hot outside, DCT lag becomes really annoying in Personal mode. During winter time there were close to "no cases" for me when flooring the accelerator down until click and nothing happens for 2 seconds. Did an experiment yesterday: applied periodical pushes to pedal, wavelike action like push and release but quickly, push and again release quickly, no any reaction from car at all as a result, no rev increase, gear change, not even an attempt, like you doing nothing.

A note about fit: classic RWD biased 8HP from ZF will not fit into transverse, it is only for longitude engine placement. However there is 9HP from ZF widely used by FCA, e.g. 2.0t Tonale from Alfa is using it, Jeep etc.. Why don't BMW utilized it - is a question. The answer probably fuel consumption and price.
No question DCT is more efficient on milage/consumption as there is no power loss in torque converter, also more quick and explains how guys are getting 5.5 sec 0-100 for 28i, that is much quicker then in proclaimed tech specs and is hardly achievable for same B48 in stock X3 30i (7 horsepower more, 248HP vs 241HP), appearantly all they are lost in torque converter. However the price we pay is not refined shifting and unpredictable lags. Hopefully BMW will polish this up. |
