I'm going to add to my post. A few years ago had a guy on a motorcycle cuss me out for not using my turn signal...which I used but he wasn't paying attention and almost hit me. I chased him down and found him stopped, got out of my car to loudly inform him he was in the wrong. He instantly started apologizing with a panicked for his life look. That was all it took for me to let it go from now on, I don't need to be "that guy". Not worth the potential backlash nor did it make me feel any better, quite the opposite. Most I'll do now is honk and shake my head.

Breathe.

Trust me, it's much easier said than done. It doesn't happen over night either. You'll get there.

OP, I appreciate your candor in also stating how you initially reacted. A lot of folks would leave that out to help portray a victim. This really well illustrates cause and reaction for all parties and choices taken at different pointed. Bravo.

I'd let it go, best to have a dash cam and show the cops what he got up to, then they can find him from the licence plate and deal with it.

I have a similar story. Years back I was stuck in 3 hours of traffic after a day of fishing in Miami. Someone cut me off and flipped me off when I honked the horn and I was triggered. I tracked them down, managed to stop them and got out of the car yelling and screaming at them. It was a youngish guy and three youngish women. They were petrified. I did nothing but yell for a minute and got back in my car. When I got back to my car I looked in my mirror and realized I had blood (from fish) splattered on my face and all over my shirt. They must have been watching the news that night for someone killing other drivers and probably also remember this story to today. Dumb and I have never done anything like that since, but I doubt those four people cut people off and flip them off anymore.

It's not worth engaging these idiots. Like stated above it can only escalate things.

I try to remember this saying I got from a friend in Ohio when I have to corral my urge to flip 'em off or drive stupid:

I'd slap you but shit splatters.

"Cut him off aggressively". With loved ones in the car. Are you out of your mind??

Get out of the way, let the lunatic by. Life goes on, everyone safe. Hopefully you learned a lesson here.

On the plus side..... you got to take your M4 to 120MPH.

Now, tell us, what did the wife say? "Faster, Faster, ...." or "Ahahaha, are you crazy?"

Reminds me of this pic. Poor dog, man's best friend indeed

Anyway, since we're all sharing stories, I remember when I was the victim of a silly roadrage incident, myself and another car were both trying to change into the middle lane from adjacent ones, so no one was really at fault. I moved back into my lane once I saw him coming but somehow he FREAKED OUT and thought I was wrong/dissed him/whatever, so he proceeds to speed ahead and block me off even though I tried to move away and escape. So, there we were, 2 cars planted in the middle of traffic, and my hardtop was off since it was a nice day, so I guess that made me more exposed to whatever was coming. This guy gets out and starts yelling a bit, but hilariously wasn't in my face at all, in fact, he was 'arguing' all the way from my wife's passenger side. O....k....come at me bro since you had the guts to block my car to a standstill in the middle of freaking traffic. Anyway, after a few more seconds of his yapping, in his parting shot he claims to have a gun and then he got back into his car. Maybe he thought I was Bruce Lee and got scared. Anyway, for whatever reason, he wasn't so confident once he got out.

Don't lower yourself to these kinds of idiots lmao.

Just wasn't worth it, especially with you having other people in your car, I know that sometimes the red mist can descend but you gotta let it go.
You ended up spoiling what was most likely a good evening.
Cutting the guy off was a dumb move, especially if you was driving your M as it’s the kinda car you’d likely recognise if you was to see it again, if the guy is a ‘crazy’ he could be looking for you

Sounds like there's plenty of blame to go around OP. Whole situation sounds reckless and a potential lunatic was provoked unnecessarily.

Was at a lawyers office last week and he mentioned how pretty much every lawyer in most sectors are busy as hell. Said everyone is always pissed off at everyone else these days and people's ego's are out of control.

I only honk (long honk) these days when what another idiot did was really dangerous and they are at fault for being on phone or doing something amazingly bad. Whats funny is instances of giving friendly honk (2 short toots) most time people think its malicious and get pissed. Most of the time when people piss me off they just get a blank stare/look when I pass them, usually to left lane campers.

2 weeks ago a soccer mom in a giant SUV sped up to 80-85 to get into the left lane cutting me off as I was about to go by her, and then did 75mph in the left lane, this was 70mph SL.

It was a life & death situation...my wife was on the phone with 911 and I was doing everything I could to get away from him.

I don't carry a gun in my car. If he had stopped us, we could have been murdered in the middle of the freeway

Sorry. I was trying to inject a bit of levity into the topic. Glad you are all OK.

You were part of the reason this became a possible "life & death situation."

You said in the OP "I flashed my lights and cut him off aggressively."

Never should have done this. You made a bad situation worse by doing so. Especially when you're dealing with a person who is obviously not normal. Next time just ignore the a$$hole and he will probably move on and so can you.
