Likewise why have the locking buttons been removed from the top of the doors? These had been usefull for a visual check that car doors have been locked for decades on all makes of car. Could it be better security without the buttons on the door top, or have they become obsolete with the advent of central locking?

Again I guess that unless we can be convinced we are better off without a certain feature then we will suspect the bean counters have been at work again.
I would say it also saves time installing them as well. Glove box Lights door sills and other modifications could save them time which is more potential cost savings than what we might initially believe. Could also be a part shortage, quality issues or reallocation etc. But only bmw knows and probably thinks 99 percent of their customers don’t care about it which is probably true since most don’t notice the little things.

Let’s just see if they do that to any other new release like the x2 down the line it, it might become a trend to tighten their lines and output.

This is also a common tactic with any manufactures.

If it's motion sensing, I wonder will it turn on when the car is moving or is it something with a mercury switch (or similar) that can detect when the door is open?

Please let us know how it works and a link.

I do have a glovebox light. However, if I don't, I'll put this GE motion sensor puck light in the glove box. Got them from Walmart for about $3 a piece. (see pic below, shows the light in my X1's glovebox) I use these lights in my garage. They come on when I walk in and goes off after about 15 seconds. No, if the glovebox is closed while the car is in motion, it will not come on.

and yes, that is a radar detector activator in the glovebox.

I love going to Costco in Canada(usually Windsor or Montreal). You guys have some interesting stuff that are not sold at Costco in the US. The best part is that Canadian Costco accepts US Dollar cash!

On the way back, the US CBP guys always looked at me funny when they saw my Costco haul from Canada.

Best of luck to all.
Hi can you please help me with the name & address of the BMW dealership who has done this. Thanks

Has anyone managed to wire in the glove box light? I have to pick mine up tomorrow and looking in the glove box hole it doesn’t look like it will be as straightforward as I first thought.

Any instructions on what needs to be done would be great. Otherwise I may have to sell a kidney and ask the dealer to install it worst case scenario.

I picked up my car nearly 3 weeks ago and was certain I was going to retrofit the glove box light but the glove box is really small anyway and doesn't really need a light so don't think I'll bother now. I agree it was penny pinching to remove it in the first place but don't see it worth the expense, or have the need, to retrofit it.

Exactly! I don’t put anything in it that I need regularly

What are the part numbers you needed to order?

ordered the light as per the part number posted previously. 63315A42427.

There needs to be a wire with a plug on the end of it coming off the loom to connect to the globe.

I had a bit of a feel around through the glovebox light hole and only felt 1 wire coming off the loom going up the dashboard I don’t know if that is connected to anything or not but I wasn’t about to pull with any great force against it.

If I don’t find anything online today I will probably give the dealer a call to see if they can fit it and how much it will cost.

What was the cost and source for that part? If the wiring harness and connector isn't there then I suspect it would be cost prohibitive to add it.

I had a look with a usb camera I used for a water leak. I could only speculate it looks like there could be a connector taped to the loom but unless you pull the glovebox out you wouldn’t know. I did notice another thing. Looks like it doesn’t have the sensor on the glove box to tell the light when to turn on and off. So bit pointless installing it without that. Total pain the arse.

To the bloke who reckons the dealer fitted this for him. Who was your dealer? It seems very unlikely many dealers are going to do this for anyone.

Does anybody have a picture of the sensor? Is it just a contact switch with the door?

So, I had a look at my '23 28i glovebox for the contact switch, and as far as I can tell there isn't one visible. I suspect it's connected to the hinge arms that recede into the dash as you close the door. I left my phone in the glovebox recording video while I opened and close the door and can confirm that there is something turning the light off though.

I’m waiting for the dealer to get back to me about it. Will post what happens. That little light cost $67 AUD on its own. Hate to think how much the rest will cost.

The 3 dollar puck light works great. Not sure how long the battery will last but I'm almost never in there. A quick and easy fix without a lot of time or effort. From the drivers seat you'd never know it wasnt the factory light

Heard back from the dealer. The wiring diagram shows there is a 4pin plug and there is a switch. Basically just need to remove the glove box to find them. I’ve only worked on Holdens which have next to nothing behind the dash so I think I will just get them to fit it after seeing quite a few electronics going on from under the dash and through the hole of the light.

Well as a final update. I was booked in today to have the glovebox taken out and glove fitted. Drove the car up the street radio off. Not a single rattle or vibration in the car and decided I don’t kneed a light that bad I’m willing to risk them adding a rattle to the car later so didn’t get it done. Maybe when the car gets to first service. For now it’s only done 1600km.
