Update 4:

The MINI Clubman is an uncomfortable car! My partner and I drove to Studley Castle last week for a three-night stay, which is approx. 140miles from our home - we both felt like we'd driven 500miles non-stop by the time we arrived, both suffering back ache. Also, the economy of the MINI (a Cooper S) sucks compared with my X1. Finally, the dash looks like it was designed by a 12year-old; garish and distracting - give me back my minimalist X1 dash! I have asked the rental company to give me a BMW product that is at least equivalent to the X1 (this is Enterprise, and under their deal with BMW, they are only allowed to rent BMW products as loan cars).

Regarding my X1, I have now been told the gearbox will be delivered to the dealer sometime w/c 15th Jan - not sure whether or not to take this update with a pinch of salt...

Update 5:

Yesterday morning, out-of-the-blue, I had a call from Enterprise car hire company to say they had a BMW Series 1 they could swap for the MINI – I said yes, anything is better than the MINI! So approx. 11:00AM, a guy turns up to my house with an almost new Series 1 M-sport – it is an order of magnitude better than the MINI and a very nice and fun car to drive (has all the ‘toys’ too!).

And then today I get a text message from the BMW dealer to tell me the new gearbox has arrived – ten days earlier than expected, and that they hope to have my X1 back to me this Wednesday! Things are perhaps looking up…

Update 6 (and hopefully the final one!)

I picked my car up from the dealer first thing this morning. Uneventful 18mile drive to the office, so hopefully all is well

They fully valeted it too, so it’s like having a brand new car again!

did you ask them what the gearbox replacement would cost, if you had to pay it with your own money? (for example, after the warranty expires)

that's the question I ask now, after every warranty repair. the last one being the center screen and head unit replacement for the software glitch. the dealer said it would be well over $4000(USD) if out of warranty.

thanks!

No, I never thought to ask. I guess I should have.

on second thought... probably not advisable to ask, unless you're only leasing your BMW. (or have a long extended BMW warranty, say 7 years or 100k miles)

Man, I hope you get this fixed soon!! I'm sorry you had these problems. I just got out of my 23 x1, they bought it back and I got a 24 x1. The transmission is SOO much smoother and nicer. It almost feels like my first x1 was a dud. Hopefully that's not the case for you.

Yes, got it back yesterday and so far, so good, though I've only done three short trips so far (15 - 20miles)

As an aside, after the dreadful MINI I had as a loan car, it was exchanged for a 1 Series M-sport 118D automatic for two days of needing a loaner - not ony was that car an order of magnitude better than the MINI, I felt it had a far superior automatic gearbox than the one fitted to the X1.

Also there was no hesitation whatsoever from a standing start. It was not even MHEV. I was also pleasantly surprised at just how refined the diesel engine was, and it had plenty of low down grunt. It was a very nice and refined car to drive, so much so my partner wants one for her next car!
