I've found that some USB ports are more reliable than others for music.
The one in the front on the left side of the centre console console is best for me.
The one on the right side recognises the stick, but says there are no music files on it.
Using a 128GB Sandisk Ultra Fit (formatted to NTFS) in a USB A to USB C convertor.
Stick has combination of FLAC and MP3 files all in the root.

Useful. Thankyou.
Will try the front left port, as currently using front right - with mixed results.
Rear ports don't work at all for us.

Interesting observation, and at the same time utterly ridiculous on the part of BMW. This should not be this hard...

Maybe I am doing something wrong. Have a 2025 X1 with idrive 9. Plugged in the Samsung USB-C into each one of four ports and got nothing.

I think data on the front USB-C ports was removed as a penny pinching move at some point recently. A bit like the glovebox light. I’m surprised they haven’t removed the passenger seat yet.

I have the same problem. Only two USB-C ports for charging my phone but not possible to transfer data.
But how can I use the USB-C ports to listen music? Does someone has a alternative option herefore?

Sadly, you don’t. The alternative is to use Bluetooth to connect to the phone.

Very sad, and bad of BMW that they change this.
Do you recommend a free app for the iPhone?

Can you not use Apple CarPlay or just use the Music app on your phone with a Bluetooth connection? Check the Navigation, Entertainment, and Communication manual for the car. It details how to use it.

Yes - load your music to the Apple Music app, create playlists, etc, and stream via CarPlay (or Bluetooth).

I know how to use it. But I want to operate and select the Music app via my Apple Carplay and not via my phone during driving.

Apple Music is only free for the first 3 months. After 3 months you need to pay right?

For streaming music from the cloud; not for your own personal music library. Your phone just functions like an iPod for your own music.
