That is one possibility, but the normal way they do that would be to charge EV owners more just as they charge BMW owners more than Honda owners, because BMWs tend to be more expensive to repair than Hondas.

What percent of EV's are actually catching fire?

Hertz has decided to sell off 20,000 vehicles within its electric fleet - prompting an explanation for the move.

The auto rental giant explains that part of their reasoning for the decision is drivers crashing the cars at a higher rate - increasing financial burdens since they're more expensive to repair.

However, this dangerous trend isn't limited to the vehicle rental market, as data shows that motorists switching from gas to electric models have similar problems.

On average, insurance claim rates rise 14.3 percent after drivers transition to an electric vehicle (EV) - while the severity of those damage claims is 14.5 percent higher, CNN reports.

I've had no increase in 2024 for commercial auto, equipment or business insurance. Erie has never done an increase on me in the 4 years I've had them. State Farm constantly did increases and for worse coverage. Personal autos, home and umbrella policies come out in a week or two, which is also with Erie.

Exactly this. If it was just EVs the insuranc companies would just jack the rates for those cars. The problem is the cost of repairs for ALL cars have skyrocketed. Accidents are occuring at a higher rate and each accident is costing a ton more for the insurance company to settle between parts, labor, rental cars, ECT. A simple fender bender no longer costs a couple hundred to fix - it is now thousands.

I wonder how much of the increases relate to increasing losses from uninsured motorists….which puts more pressure on those of us who insure our vehicles.

I moved to Virginia in summer 2019 and the coverage on my 135i was $500 per year. I just paid for the next 6 months of coverage and I paid $560. Granted I now live in Texas so that has something (maybe a lot) to do with it but sheesh.

My wife’s Tacoma went from $630 per 6 months last summer to now over $800. Absolutely unsustainable.

I live in Texas where we have 2.5 million uninsured motorists… it definitely impacts our rates.

Texas is actually much better than average in this regard. Only 8.3% of drivers are uninsured. The national average is 12.6%, and in Mississippi it's almost 30%

I doubt it has very little to do with that but more with the cost of repair. Insurance companies are about loss actuarial tables. Since most EV's are second or third vehicles and get a multi discount, the folks who only have a EV are in for a shock. No one said trying the save the planet was going to be cheap, except for every Democrat running for office.

Can you imagine what the insurance pay out on this will be?

These images were posted in the r/Porsche subreddit by Reddit user No_Supermarket9751, who says the thievery happened at night in Dusseldorf, Germany. According to the post, the thieves used tin snips to cut the lovely Mamba Green bodywork apart and remove the lights, which resulted in this horrifying sight. The Taycan’s fenders are made from aluminum, so cutting through them with tin snips wouldn’t be too tough.

The thieves just wanted to buy food for their children. It’s not easy either for them to maintain an iPhone 15 Max.

Germany changed/changing irreversibly. Thanks to (primarily) Angela Merkel.

Background: living in a more and more lawless and uninsured-motorist stronghold (NOVA) where my liability insurance in 2024 started to cost the same as my initial full coverage for my car in 2014. I have an older car and the annual USAA full-coverage rates went 10% above the car's value. I also drive a lot less than before. So last year I dropped full coverage and went with USAA liability.

I just signed up today, choosing the policy to start during next week. Will call USAA Monday to cancel my current insurance, although can do that online as well, but want to chat to make sure I am not missing anything.

You have to be USAA qualified, but do not need to have USAA insurance. Sign up was easy and logical online. I signed in to my USAA account and searched for NOBLR Followed the link outside to USAA's NOBLR web-quote. It imported all my USAA information and at the end I was able to choose between two pre-set policies (BASIC and MODERATE) or a CUSTOM one that you can tweak.

There are two components. One fixed rate monthly, and one variable rate monthly. The variable depends on your miles/day and (I believe) your driving score which is monitored by an app you must download. I already had USAA's SafePilot app for a few years snooping on my driving habits in exchange for a discounted rate, so had no problems with downloading "USSA Pay As You Drive by NOBLR".

Checking some "what ifs", as long as drive low miles and drive reasonably safe, the savings will materialize as estimated. A few long trips may drive the variable-rate portion of the costs higher, but should be offset by a significantly more number of low-miles days.

I accelerate fairly briskly, but very smoothly and I anticipate braking and don’t come to abrupt stops. I have found that talking on the phone even with Bluetooth is too distracting for me, so I virtually never do it. The only time I answer a call while I’m driving is if I know it’s someone calling with something regarding my father and that’s very infrequent. As I mentioned, my main thing is that I do consistently speed. My standard speed is nine miles over the limit. But, NOBLR doesn’t monitor my speed. So far I have a score of 96 and the app tells me the average score is 84. I’m pretty pleased right now.
Check your declarations page with NOBLR. I just discovered they lied to me. More later.

Definitely. Geico bumped my monthly rate up to a whopping $500!

Got my personal cars policy renewals today, no change in price again this year. 4 cars plus one motorcycle for a total of $131 per month.

The house on the other hand went up 20%, it says due to increase in coverage amounts. Overall I'm not complaining, no business insurance of vehicle increase or personal cars.

Erie Insurance, I've been with them all and they are by far the only company I've ever liked. My insurance premiums are as low as they can get, numerous policies, perfect driving records and zero claims as well. If they cover your area it might be worth calling an agent.

I did that. More than $400 higher annually if I paid 100% upfront and more than $700 with monthly payments.

Erie is probably the best insurance company outside of companies like Chubb, i run a body shop and most the companies have gone to utter shit to deal with as a consumer and a shop. It sucks to see so many in this thread with USAA because they might be the worst insurance company that you could possibly have anymore.
