She's recently had the entire head unit changed as the screens would randomly go entirely black when she was driving.

I wonder if the Auto stop/start can be deactivated by voice.
I tried that but it did not work for me.

I keep forgetting this car has voice activation, must give it a try when I'm driving next.

The loss of the buttons was a major concern for me when I first got the car, but I have kinda got used to it now. I don't find myself needing to change things very much whilst I am driving. The climate controls are hardly ever touched, I leave it on 20C auto and it does its thing ok for me. The only real use of the touch screen on a daily basis is to switch off the auto start/stop and speed warning, but this has become part of my post start process and a muscle memory action.

I do however think on longer drives the iDrive controller from my previous car will be missed as I used that to browse through my spotify playlists and change the music. Time will tell on that.

Touch screen interfaces and the loss of buttons is just the way the car industry is heading. We can complain about it, but I can't see it getting much better to be honest.

I thougt you could disable the speed warning bij pushing the cruise control button twice.

It’s not worked for me previously. But I bet if BMW would add it in an upcoming update, nearly EVERYONE would use it
👍👍 It might be cheaper for them than fixing the awful ASS experience the vehicles now have.

I'll putting mine up for sale soon, despite a $10k deposit I'll likely need to cover a shortfall as these cars have depreciated badly in Australia.

I've fallen out of love with the BMW brand, I think I'll get something much cheaper/basic and less pretentious for my daily driver.

you are not alone - I also said the thrill is gone

I have been a loyal BMW devotee my past 10 cars now, since my first I've never felt any need to look elsewhere. And while I'm not rushing to get out of this one yet because I would take a bath, I will most certainly be looking elsewhere when this lease is up.

Before BMW I had a number of Acuras and never had any complaints other than I was looking for more oomph.

Agree with all. I sold my x1 M35 after 10 months and haven't looked back.
Outside of what you mentioned, I really thought I'd miss some of the features / capabilities of the latest I drive that I felt they did well, but turns out I don't even miss those things.

For those of you that are unhappy with your X1/X2, I’m just curious how many previous BMWs you’ve had because it seems like most of the complaints are tied to what your other/previous cars have done.

I agree with that assessment. In fact I would say its possibly the largest factor. Speaking from my own experience every set of BMWs I've ever had I've been pleased-to-impressed with. Each one has been better than the last - until now.

I've only ever bought brand new from the same dealer and in pairs, so here goes:

1st set, Purhcase - owned for ~4 years
2013 5 Series 535i xDrive
2013 X5 xDrive35i

2nd set, Purhcase - owned for ~3 years
2017 5 Series 540i xDrive
2017 X5 xDrive35i

3rd set - leased for 36 months, extended to 38
2019 X3 M40i
2019 X3 M40i

4th set - leased for 36 months, extended to 38
2022 X3 M40i
2022 X3 M40i

5th set - leased for 39 months

So, based on what I’ve seen you post in other threads and now reading this, it sounds like the X1 was a major downgrade based on your BMW history, and I guess I’m not surprised that you’re less than thrilled.

As a person who has only recently purchased my first BMW (‘25 M340i) with my 2nd currently in transit to the port (‘25 X2 M35i), I don’t find it to be disappointing but both BMWs are replacing Subarus. I don’t have any attachment to previous versions of iDrive other than 8.5 (what we have in the M340i), and I am not attached to the wheel.

I DO know that my voice activated stuff in my Subaru never really worked for me, but BMW’s personal assistant works very well in our M340i and in the several hours I’ve played with iDrive 9 in the 2024/2025 X1/X2 I’ve been in.

I never had the experience of being able to code out stuff, and I figured out the assistant using Hey BMW so the same way it works in iD9.

Do I wish there was a physical Auto Stop/Start button in the X1/X2, sure, but it’s easy enough to swipe down to turn it off with the shortcut.

I guess it’s all about perspective, especially when you don’t have previous cars by the same manufacturer to compare it to.

Yes I guess you could say I have been spoiled / fortunate to experience what BMW is capable of. And I do really like the looks of this X1 - much more attractive than the new X3, and the drivetrain isn’t bad (knew full well it wasn’t going to be as powerful as my previous and don’t fault it for that).

Having other BMWs in the past is precisely why I didn't like this one.
Over the last ~12 years I've owned 6 BMWs:
2008 m3, 2015 m3, 2016 m3, 2020 M2, 2021 m340i, 2024 X1 m35.

My first BMW - had VW over past 15 years and previously, mainly Fords, some Renault etc. Purchased on the basis BMW is seen as a premium car and wanted to step up from VW (Audi is just a repackaged VW) and so my expectations were high - so disappointed. Nice looking car, has great equipment (on paper) but poorly executed - overpriced and under-performs. Will be gone this year at some point. Very unlikely to buy another BMW in the future (and certainly not my next car).

'08 e92 335i, '11 e90 335i, '20 430i, and currently have an '03 e46 ZHP sedan as a personal use car.

While I don't hate the X1, the convenience of an SUV doesn't outweigh my longing for a manual transmission sporty sedan/coupe, so most likely will not be keeping mine once the lease is up. This was my first experience with a DCT transmission, and while I knew going in that it wasn't going to be as smooth as a traditional automatic, it's still irking enough to me that I probably would not get another DCT equipped car again.

I previously owned a 1997 328 convertible, a 2006 650 convertible, and now own a 2025 x1. I chose this car knowing full well it wouldn’t handle like my previous 2 cars, and while my learning curve has been steep, I don’t regret this purchase one bit.
I like the exterior styling, it has enough pep to pass slower moving cars on the highway, and the start stop issue that so many people complain about can be easily solved by disarming it.

I also agree with all that you said there.

For me my gripe is the interface ~ and it has to be because of what I have come to know but I also work in IT so have a lot of exposure to change, and am all for new technology when it's 'bigger, better, faster, more' - this sucker has gone backwards, taking practical features away and making the ones that do remain cumbersome and unintuitive.

I'm also quite peeved the penny pinching that has been outlined numerous times on here. I just don't get it - this is supposed to be a premium vehicle, even if it is the lowest tier. If it really is about the bottom dollar then just charge more but don't strip off things that the cheapest of cheap economy cars include. Not to brag but we also have a 2022 Kia Forte base model w no options so I know what I'm talking about

The “cheap” cars need it because it’s one of the things that they have going for them! 😉

I am actually pretty pissed off that they took out the USB data ports.

In today’s world we kind of expect our tech to work flawlessly from the beginning, but it’s just not how it goes.

Even Apple has had its share of issues and it’s got millions of people beta testing its stuff. They didn’t get iOS fully baked in the original iPhone if I remember correctly. It had its own share of issues (yes, I had one).

Yeah, I get that a phone isn’t LIKELY to cause major injuries or inconvenience, and it’s certainly not the same price point, but I’m also willing to give BMW the opportunity to sort things out.

Many car manufacturers have built their systems on the Android Auto platform, so I can accept that it will (likely) get to where it should be.

(And now have an M240i, so still use this forum for that, and happened to visit the X1 side here as well today.)

Attached is my "exit review" I sent BMW a year ago ... if it might be of help to anyone doing research.

Certainly not all negative, and of course everyone has different preferences, priorities, what annoys them or not. But in the end, too many constant negatives for me.

First page is my poor delivery experience, review begins on page 2.
