"Race rubber" and DOT R-Compound tires are two different things. Some poeple are calling "race rubber" the DOT R-compound tires that you see in stock class. Short story is this: if it is a slick and is NOT DOT rated, then it is not stock class legal.

SCCA does allow R-compound tires in FStock. Hoosiers seem to be the tire of choice around here.
I guess I can just get some 17 or 18 x 8" wheels all around and some Kumho or other less expensive performance tires. Tire Rack has some wheels that are $130 but they are 25 pounds or so. Still lighter than stockers I guess.
I don't want to shell out $460 per wheel for SSR's when they can get me DQ'ed.

Thanks for the help!
If you don't want to shell out LOTS of cash and you still want the DOT R-Compound tires and stay in stock class I have a suggestion.
I had hypothetically thought of what I would do if I bought a BMW 135 next year as it comes standard with staggered wheels. I would put the R-compound tires on the stock wheels using the widest tire size I could on the front and maybe rear considering fittment on the wheel and in the fenders and keeping close the overall stock tire diameter. Then buy some wheels of your choice for the OEM tires that you would use during day to day driving.
Just my 2 cents.

Thats a thought, but I remember reading somewhere that my wheels weigh over 30 lbs each. Probably doesnt matter since it is my first time on a track.

I just got the green light to go to Buttonwillow (I was on a waiting list). So I was thinking about this setup:
4 18x8 Sport Edition KM11 wheels
4 Kumho Ecsta 225/40's

The whole setup would be about $1000. If I need to be staggered later then I can buy 2 8.5 inch wheels for the back and r-compound if desired.

Any advice?

S4, are you going to Buttonwillow?

Rob, work has been a bitch lately..and I cannot get additional time off for a weekday event..so no, I will not be at the BMWCCA event at Buttonwillow on Sept 7th.

Remember, bring your car home in the same condition it went to the track. Dont overdo it.

I have picked up a set of slightly used SSRs for the rear, and will be using something else on front. It may not be the prettiest solution, but it's all that exists at the moment.

Like I said, probably no one will notice or care if you're running 8.5s all the way around - until you beat them.

Well, I just ordered the Sport Edition KM11 wheels in 18x8 and a set of 225-40/18 Tires (Falken Azenis 615's).

I was thinking about getting some SSR's for the rear as well.....

Thanks for the input guys.
