Plasma has a problem of getting dimmer and dimmer the more you use it. LCD's, as you can tell with your computer monitor, doesn't have that problem. Contrast ratio is also better.

Nevermind, I guess I stand corrected then lol. I have two Samsung LCDs though, and they're great!

LCD > Plasma, a Plasma TV would still last your 20 years until the color start to fade away. by the way, when you shop at a store for TVs, do not trust the contrast differences you see in them, because 1)default setting from factory (ie. Sony ALWAYS has a default contrast setting at brightest) 2)retailer marketing strategies for selling goal.
However I would trust a LCD more than Plasma. |

Plasmas are fine, all the problems with Plasmas are in the past. They are on their like 8th generation now. Panasonic is your best bang for your buck, if you want to spend more money, you can't go wrong with a Pioneer Elite or Fujitsu.
Go to www.avsforum.com/ and do some reading there. You'll find a lot of misinformation here.

Plasma does have better contrast ration and better blacks, which when viewed in an appropriately set up system, is way more important than resolution. I would rather have a great looking 720p plasma than a 1080p LCD. The only time the LCD has a prayer of looking better is with Blue ray and/or HD DVD, for everything else, Cable/Satellite/Regular DVD etc the 720p plasma will look better. My 2 cents

For under 50", you're wasting your money on a 1080p.

among comparable models, LCD can not have better contrast than plasma. LCD can't do true black. It gets better with every generations, but it's still shining a light through the opaque crystal, so it's just a very deep grey. Watch LOTR on a calibrated LCD and then a calibrated plasma. No comparison. Plasma is much better with the blacks.

here's my proof- http://www.cardiovision.tv/news/lcd_vs_plasma.asp Also, if you do a search (on a search engine of your choice), you will find that virtually all sites that have the "resolution" section will say that LCDs have better resolution. |

IMO, Plasmas look more natural. It is my preference.

ehhh....I don't necessarily agree. If you have a BluRay or HDDVD source - the 1080p makes a difference. On cable / sat - you are correct, IMO.

Since the sub 50" screens have lower than 1920×1080 native resolution and cannot display 1080p pixel for pixel. Correct? Or am I wrong here?

A 42" plasma display may be optimally viewed from 10-14 feet. A 50" plasma display will look best from 12-16 feet. Give or take a couple feet, but that gives you an idea. Take a measuring tape then go to the store and back away from the TV and see if you like the viewing distance on both screens.
