I'll have a PS5 by 11/6. I'll likely never play it either.

Well in that case I'll be happy to take it off your hands once the new Gran Turismo drops....

They liked the paper but during our discussion one of the other students didn't think it would work because it features an element of "classism" based on ability to pay. I argued the advanced requirement of training investment should be the most dominant filter but they seemed to think any advanced fee structure would make is classist by default. It was an interesting discussion at the time.
You can make a "classist" argument for damn near anything. And it will have varying degrees of merit. It's a weak argument IMO. I don't want to muck up this thread with politics though.

To their point though -
  • Merely having a car requires $$$ (purchase price)
  • insurance requires additional $$$ - and insuring cheaper cars that are crashed more often can be more expensive than insuring a far more expensive car that rarely crashes / gets stolen or vandalized
  • training requires $$$
  • getting to and from the DMV requires $$$
  • even just using the car requires $$$ (tires, gas, oil, maintenance)
  • registration requires $$$
  • bridge tolls
  • carpool lane tolls
  • toll road use
  • etc

The entire concept of cars and ownership is classist if you want to make that argument. They need to think bigger and more critically and get past the knee-jerk "I have no idea what else to say so I'm going to try to shut this down with a 'win' button statement".

At a certain point we've decided collectively (or at least, our esteemed representatives have) that it's still worth the downside and an essential part of life. There are nearly 287 million cars in the USA, with a population of 331 million.

331-287 = 44 million.

There are 78 million children in the USA (defined as 17 or under).

Safe to say, it seems like classism for the costs of car ownership is a null argument, as pretty much everyone has at least one or more cars per household. And yeah yeah yeah some families may have one whereas another family have 8 cars and that's gonna skew things a bit but basically it holds up that classism is not a barrier of entry to car ownership aside from specific subsets like luxury brands / supercars / etc.

And at the end of the day, the additional revenue generated by the people able and willing to jump through the extra hoops can subsidize those who have a need for a vehicle but not the means to pay for the extra training. I'd also wager that those extra hoops - even subsidized - might make certain demographics (low income, undocumented immigrants, etc) far more likely to drive more carefully, thus further improving safety overall and reducing likelihood of hit and run accidents and such. Win / Win for all involved.

Was an avid video game player since Pong in the 70s. Had so many different machines I can't remember them all. Frequented all night arcades while I kept a full daytime job. Was a real addict! My last machines were PS2 and XBOX. I think the internet took it's place for me. I know technology has advanced like crazy since then. I still look and am interested in the new stuff, but will probably never play again. Just not my thing anymore.

PS - Loved Gran Turismo and have a soft spot for Nintendo.

Same here!!! My last two systems were PS2 and XBOX 360. I still have my Sega Saturn with a few choice titles. Colecovision, Atari 2600 & Atari 5200 were the first systems I ever owned and I've owned every game system up until the PS2 and 360 (…e.g…Neo Geo, Turbographx 16, etc. etc.).

P.S. I, too, have a soft spot for Nintendo. I play my gf's son's Switch occasionally.

I had a Sega Saturn. It is an awesome system, loved it! Also had Colecovision, 2600 and 5200. Intellivision, not great, Vectrex, was great, so many more.

You and I shared a lot of them, even though I'm sure our age is quite different. Brother from another mother.

Spending 3 days as a patient in our local ER waiting for a free bed upstairs a few years ago was an eye-opener. There were two lock-downs due to police investigating gang shootings, more than enough frequent flyer miles from overdoses, and the police dropping off a crazy person with no ID and putting them into the other side of the curtain from me because they couldn't find a psych facility to sign them into at night. Gotta give credit to the ER staff for dealing with this stuff every single night.....

Curious if when you pull someone over for say speeding or not stopping completely at a stoplight or stop sign if any sort of leniency is considered based on other factors. For example, I have been pulled over 3 times in the 13 years I've lived in NC. Once was a state trooper, once by the county sheriff, and once by city PD. I've been given a verbal warning at each stop when I completely expected a citation for my infraction. There are four things that I've always wondered might make an officer lean in my favor. First, I'm a disabled vet and my license and tags show that. Second, I have a class A CDL. While I don't use it, I still maintain my DOT physical and the license is still valid. Third I have a CCW and each time I was carrying. I identified myself as a permit holder, stating where the firearm was and waited for them to direct me to retrieve my license from my wallet which is in my right rear pocket and the weapon is at my 4 o'clock. Finally, I have an FOP decal on the top corner of my window. It's just my parking permit for the FOP because I am an associate member and use the range often, but it says FOP on it.

This is really a question to help the internal discussion in my head about it, I'm not looking to go start a cannonball run after this haha. My wife was with me for each stop, and she taunted me when I was let off with a warning each time, so I'm looking for more perspective on it if you will.

This and the fact that you followed "the proper way to act when pulled over" manual to the T
