why do half the people of japan wear surgical masks? at first i thought it was because of radiation fears but there are pics of a lot of people doing it even before the nuke plants got bad.

A few reasons, some of which are shockingly altruistic: if people have a cold, they wear a mask to prevent other people from getting it (!!!). Also, many people have seasonal allergies, and it helps greatly.

I saw on the local news here a number of 180 aftershocks after the quake. That's 6 per day, to put it in perspective .... And the quake warning system goes off every few minutes over the radio, though fortunately it is usually <5 magnitude. But still.

Man that's amazing. I wonder if that huge tanker sitting in that neighborhood will ever move?
I also found out pretty recently that my great uncle worked for GE and helped build the 1st reactor at the Fukushima plant.
