Monday. After hauling heaviness around England for nearly 2 weeks, a lighter setup will be welcome. And it's far, far cheaper than going to a Fuji setup (which I may still do eventually).

Well one thing I noticed today with the 7D2 is that it drains the battery far faster than any other Canon I have. After 600 or so shots, I'm down to 40%. I think I need to temper my 10FPS lust

At twice the FPS of the 5D MkIII, I'm not surprised. Plus all the extra gizmos going on in the VF. Aren't the 7D MkII batteries supposed to be more robust?

The problem is the GPS. Turn it off and your battery life will go back to what you're accustomed to. (Getting a back-up as soon as they're in the stores).

Even when the camera is off, the GPS checks it's position. To stop this, I'll pull the battery when I get home.

The GPS is default disabled, and I never turned it on.

Either way, yes an extra battery will be purchased. I really don't want to put a grip on it, as I prefer the smaller body and less weight.

The 7D MkII has GPS *and* a full metal body? I thought the whole reason behind the plastic top of the 6D is so the GPS could work.

EDIT: Never mind, I see it has GPS. Maybe the the 6D's plastic roof is for the wifi?

Hmm, I wonder if it's the dual processors. 10-fps isn't that different from 8-fps, so I doubt that it's that.

Ouch. Saw a sideline photog get nailed in the Pats/Broncos game. Looked like a 1Dx and Big White went flying. I saw the hood fly off, but hopefully that was the only damage. I hope the photog is ok.

A week or two ago, in a Oklahoma game, I think, a receiver landed on a 400/f2.8 and split in half.

The photog was no spring chicken and was a big guy. He landed hard. It was the very thing I feared when I shot the EIU game last weekend. I got hit in the leg by an overthrown pass, but that was it.

I fully charged my 7D MkII's battery, put it in the camera last night, with the camera off, and it dropped to 97% in 8-hours. That's the GPS checking its location periodically, even with the camera off, as it discloses in the owner's manual. I pulled the battery out to keep the camera ready for my next shoot.

In field usage, with the GPS on, the battery's charge quickly drops. It's going down to 58% or 75% with just a few hundred shots over two-hours. I think that maybe it's the dual processors combined with the GPS. The other Canons with dual processors had much larger batteries.

That's unfortunate. I've pulled my 7DI out of my back to shoot a month and a half after I last charged it and gotten a decent days shooting in before. My 7DI is also good for the 7 thousand+ shots I take in a single day of heavy track work.

Maybe they'll release a firmware update to help with that.

Same as 6D with the GPS.

I like the GPS feature so I have it set to refresh pretty quickly (more battery drain) for accuracy. I've pretty much got my spare battery charged and ready to go all the time, and just cycle the batteries. After 4-5 days of sitting the battery is usually dead from the gps refreshes.

Yeah, my 7DI, 5DII and 5DIII would all do thousands of shots in an outing and I would often leave a charged battery or partially discharged battery in for days and just grab the body and run. The 7DII real require much more awareness and extra batteries.

BTW, my old 5D2 and 7D1 batteries are all still working, after up to six-years.

+1 all my legacy 5d2/7d batteries from 08/09 are still going strong and can last entire all day events.

One of the reasons Pros will have a tough time switching to mirrorless is that the average mirrorless camera + EVF only gets about 300-400 shots at Best. Vs SLR performance going all day.

My X-E1 and x100 probably never even made it past 400 shots on a charge with heavy evf use.

I tried the GPS on the 6D once at a shoot where they were using a very high end GPS setup to mark old graves. My 6D's GPS was accurate to a few yards whereas the high tech one was accurate to a few inches or less. And on a couple of occasions when I took 5 or 6 shots from the same place, the GPS readout had me at 2 or 3 locations separated by yards. It's ok for keeping track of approximately where you took the shot, but the accuracy and reliability is not there. But that day I did notice a very fast battery drain even with the grip and two fresh batteries. Now I just disable GPS.

Personally, as I just do this for fun, I usually have a pretty good idea of where I took my pictures. I can see why some might find it a valuable tool, but it doesn't really add anything for me, so I will leave it disabled.

I geotag to help others find my shooting spots, so long as it doesn't get too crowded.

I'm still interested in your experience with battery life with GPS off. I think that the dual processors use a lot more power on this body. I'll welcome the discussion in the in-depth reviews by organizations like DPReview.com

It will be interesting. I'm reading a lot of others are having the same experience. Even with GPS disabled, i was pretty surprised how fast it drained. Seems I will have to start carrying a spare, that I haven't bothered with before. Heck I would take any of my bodies out if they were 70% or higher. I bet the video will really suck the juice.

It can depend on the GPS refresh rate;
Say it is every 5 minutes;

Mid-cycle, you walk over 20 yards and spend a few minutes making 10 shots; it's plausible that if the GPS refreshes during that window, some of those shots will show the previous location and some the new one.

Overall though I'm not too worried about accuracy in inches; if I am driving from place to place or on a road trip, or walking/hiking, I want the GPS to refresh often enough to get the different spots I shoot from. It's worked well for me with that goal in mind.

I think I have mine set to every minute.

Every time I look over my photos from Iceland, I wish I had geotagging back then!

For some place I've never been before and may never be again, I can see geotagging. I probably should have done more of it in the UK on our last trip. But for guys like DC and Ed who have familiar stomping grounds, geotagging is not as important, I would think. Like anything else, it's a tool you use when you need it and store away when you don't.
