I keep a high quality UV filter on my 70-200mm and 24-105mm, but never on the 500mm. I've got a circular polarizing filter for the 24-105mm and a GND, but I seldom use them. That shot of the chapel was with the light behind me and a super blue sky and I DID pull the RGB curve down a touch in the middle and pumped saturation up to around 10 out of 100. I pushed Contrast up to around 20 out of 100. Not in the chapel shot, but in some of my Grand Canyon shots, particularly midday with haze, I apply a Warming filter in DxO and pull it way down to around 20%, while also adding a lot of Contrast. Another Grand Canyon shot, with only a UV filter and nominal global processing:

and if you have that many cars like you have listed, you can afford the cameras (or would if you didn't have so many vehicles.) Fun shot, BTW |

I've got an S95 as well. I love that thing. It's got all the power of a DSLR sensor packed into a point and shoot body. Perfect for those times you want a camera but don't want to lug a DSLR and kit along.

you'll enjoy that camera, that's about as good as it gets for a point and shoot. |

I shot these pics (this is the same car) at the end of a video shoot for a client. Waiting on his OK for the video and I'll post it up!

It's a beautiful area down there, the people are nice, the beer is cheap. I can't wait to go back. Only real thing to worry about is malaria mosquitoes.

I just bought an iPhone 4S, mainly for the decent camera in a device that I carry all the time. The S95 and the G12 are cameras that are very useful when you can't manage the bulk of a good DSLR. The new EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) cameras are also worth considering, but the lens still ends up a little bulky vs. the P&S choices. Dave

I talked my dad into getting one of these because he didn't want to mess about with a DSLR and he is unwilling to learn how to shoot raw, it's just too over his head/doesn't want to learn. He didn't see satisfied with only 3x zoom on the little point and shoots, so it was the only logical solution. He loves the EVIL camera. So he's pretty happy with the decision. That's actually the second person I've talked into getting one... Canon should pay me... |

If you want to match DSLR crop-sensor capabilities with an EVIL, then you have to get one that'll shoot RAW. I think they're available, but I haven't truly researched the format. I think that in the $500 to $700 range you can challenge DSLR crop-sensors, particularly at the wide end of focal lengths.

do you mean those ones that look like a point and shoot and have the detachable lens?
or ones that are shaped like the DSLR with permanent lenses on them? |

True, not ALL the power (the newly announced 1D comes to mind ), but it shoots raw, and has better IQ than my old D50, plus many of the "options" of a DSLR. When the best camera you have is the one you have with you, it's perfect. If I have intentions of shooting, I take my DSLR. Any other time, I've got my S95 with me, just in case I see something worth shooting. I've come to hate shooting JPG, and lament the fact that I did it for so long when I first got a DSLR. That said, cell phone shooting is out for me, even with a camera as nice as the one on the iPhone 4S.

As for shooting things with a camera phone or a simple point and shoot, i feel pain holding one up in front of my face knowing i'm about to click a shot that i can never fully edit to it's maximum potential. I have one of those point and shoots that can go under water, and that's all it's used for, it sits at the bottom of my camera bag, always waiting for it's opportunity. |
