Classic media frenzy I'm afraid. Yes in big cities there are gangs and knives. The media did a great job of making this into something it isn't.
Away from the big cities it's less of an issue. People don't habitually carry knives here.

Nobody has ever pulled a knife on me in my career. Whilst I'm wary of the prospect I don't let it govern how I approach people.
It might be something to have a knife brandished but it's a whole different world for somebody to then use it on me.

We teach the LE (and everybody else) in our defense classes that if a person brandishes a knife at you, most of the time they are inexperienced and don't know how to use it.

It's the knife you don't see....one concealed correctly that you have to really watch for. I have seen some very skilled people with a blade, and if they want to use it, you are lucky getting out of that situation without some type of damage if you let them get close to you.

Of course it's a little different with LEO as they are usually in charge of the situation from the start and know how to keep someone at a safe distance from them. But for others that aren't specifically trained for that, it can be scary even though it's rare it may happen.

Either way...it's still needs to be treated as a serious issue. Someone willing to try and get that close and personal has issues!

I respect all you guys immensely. Wish everyone else shared the same sentiment.

SC, are you satisfied with your agency issued side arm? If you could carry on duty what ever you wanted, what would it be? If I was a LEO I think I would go either with a 1911 or my glock 20.

I am! I really love S&W's M&P series guns. We carry the 1.0 version of the full size, but will be upgraded to the 2.0 at some point. I personally prefer the trigger on the 1.0. I have a 2.0 compact and I don't care for the trigger as much; I do love my 2.0 M&P Shield though. I carry a number of weapons off-duty, but my main/favorite is my Sig Sauer P365 with the 15-round magazine (...along with two 12-round magazines in my pocket(s) or my sling bag); I had the grip module and magazines reworked by Boresight because I hated the native grip feel. We have the option to carry Glocks, STI's, H&K's, 1911's, etc., but you have to buy it/them yourself. I'm not a fan of Glocks personally.

Here's the reworked module and reworked base plate on my 15-round magazine. The grip is amazing, and they even added some grip under the trigger guard.

Just because Im interested in: I heard and read that some states had reduced by law the max cap of a pistol magazine up to 10 rounds.
When I see your modded model, are those rules are also valid for cops outta duty or did they made exceptions? So if you are wearing a sidearm CCW in private, does it have max 10 rounds?

in NYS they limited handguns to 10 rounds but if you owned a handgun before the law was put into effect you could carry 15 rounds in that "grandfathered in" gun

My state has a 10-round magazine restriction, CCW or not. I am not subject to that restriction however.

Glock 22 was our duty weapon, I bought one when I retired because I loved the gun and was really comfortable with it.....it's too bad that our laws are so strict so now CCW, and only 10 round mags as opposed to the 15 round + 1 of our duty pistol.

Is your CCW LEO specific? When we retire here in California, we are provided a retired LEO badge and our right to carry is issued through LEOSA.

When we retire our duty weapon is taken back by the dept....we do get a "retired" badge but there is extremely limited CCW here, I am only aware of a few permits issued in the last 30+ years. I'd never get one unless there was a viable threat against me and then the permits aren't open ended.

Damn that sucks. You guys need a LEOSA Act there. We are given the option to buy our duty weapons at retirement. Nice looking badge Sir!

Ok, is that caused by you're a cop or the LEO(SA)?

Sedan_Clan Salty Dog, your thoughts?

Would you have shot on him as well or continued tasing? IMHO, he deserved a bullet, or 20?

I am always reluctant to judge the actions of people without having been right there with them as the video does reveal a lot it doesn't show what the actual moment was that led to the shooting. I will say that a mentally ill person armed with a knife often ends badly, (this guy appears to be EDP) and carrying a meat cleaver. The armchair quarterbacks will likely say that he was just standing their and posed no threat, and I don't know that the officers couldve talked him into surrender, they employed the CEW, so were attempting to apprehend with minimal use of force and it appears that when they went in to cuff he was still active. It's difficult to see exactly what happens on the ground but clearly the one officer is down and the other officers are trying to extricate him and also using their firearms to stop the threat. One of the basic principals in use of force when dealing with edged weapons is to be mindful of second and third weapons, People who carry knives often carry more than one, and when you get in close that's when edged weapons are the most dangerous.

If this has happened in Canada all the special interest groups would be calling for the officers to be charged for using excessive force. Police shooting inquests were a major part of my job during the last few years of my career. I suspect the officers will be cleared of wrong doing, but may see some criticism. As for would I have shot, quite possibly. If I felt my life or the lives of another officer or civilian were at risk. The officers will have to justify their actions. It's so easy to judge from a few seconds of video and the comfort of your living room barcalounger.

I personally wouldn't. There are just too many opportunities and too much money to be earned (...and a ton of dirtbags to make for some exciting shifts) to ever consider leaving the cesspool of crime that is Southern California.

Salty Dog has more or less echoed my sentiments, but without going into a lengthy response, I probably would have avoided tasing altogether and just employed deadly force.
