I'm up skiing this week and the mountain was closed today due to wind. We had the afternoon so my son and I had a nice lunch and when to see the latest offering by Ethan Coen. It's called Drive-Away Dolls.
This movie gets horrible reviews by most everybody, critics and general public alike. My son love some Coen movies (Big Lebowski) and hates others (Fargo). I'm exactly the opposite. Fargo is one of my favorites. So, we were both interested to see how we would like this low-rated movie. We both loved Drive-Away Dolls. The two main characters were great together. If you like the Coen Brothers, this movie may entertain you. Be warned: It's not for everybody. |

I wasn't all that into the first part, so hopefully the second part will be better. I've always preferred books to movies and Dune has always been one of my all-time favorites (although the next two in the trilogy get a little weird)-- I've literally worn out a few copies of Dune and still re-read it every year or two. I've always found that my imagination and the additional depth and detail provided by a book made for a better experience than that on the screen. I've felt that way about The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings (both the rotoscoped version and the Jackson Version), The Lathe of Heaven, A Wrinkle in Time, The Right Stuff, Master & Commander, etc.) That being said, I'm looking forward to seeing it. It'll be interesting if nothing else. R.

But the previews, even if I had never read Dune as many times as I have, just seems astounding to me. This is definitely a big-screen movie! I don't imagine I'm going to need subtitles in the XD theatre!!!! I'll re-watch at home if I want to critique the dialogue in comparison to the book.

In preparation of Smile's release, Paramount hired "smilers" to show up at random public places, like the Today Show and a Yankees v. Red Sox game, and deliver their most haunting smirk....

Reporting in first?
Immense cinematography! XD sound was amazing. First half of movie was pretty true to book, second they deviated a bit. Probably as much time management as anything else. Definitely will see again! Part 3 in 2025?

What does that even mean?
Ok, cool. I was under the impression that Dune would just be a 2-parter. That explains John Wick and a buncha other stuff.

So.
I went to see Dune 2 today. I'm probably the contrarian here, but I'm going to go with "Meh". People are raging about it (good for them), but I was underwhelmed for a whole bunch of different reasons-- not the least of which was that the costume designers were probably dropping acid throughout the entire film production. Let's just say that the screen blurb that said the movie was only "Based on" the book was very, very accurate. I've read the book at least a dozen times since high school, and I had trouble following what was going on. Two (or more depending on how you count them and at least one miniseries) movies made about the book and I'm standing by my original thought that Dune is simply a story that can *not* be made into a movie. There are just too many moving parts that intertwine-- I just don't think that a movie will ever do it justice-- at least not with any coherence. If you enjoyed it, great.... but I found myself looking at my watch repeatedly during the movie-- never a good sign. Ymmv. R.

Bladerunner 2049 was the exception for me, great story, and follow up to the original. |

Watched DUNE 2.
Hmmmmm... I was expecting much more. I found it too much of a "Drama Love Story" with a sprinkle of Action here and there and too long. 2.5/5 for me. |

That's interesting. I thought the costume design was great. It was certainly less ridiculous than Lynch's and not cheesy/cheap like the miniseries. Irulan's outfits were a bit much, but that's about it. To each their own though!
